A sports conference aiming to bring together 350 people, including students, academics, national governing bodies and other stakeholders in University Sport, to discuss female empowerment through sport will be held on 8 October, in Stirling, Scotland.

The first ever Women in Sport conference organised by the University of Stirling’s Student Union will explore the role of sport as a vehicle for positive body image, identities and relationships and will examine how women in elite and student sport can actively promote equality and diversity.

Commonwealth Games Silver medalist Eilidh Child and Stirling graduate Susan Egelstaff, Commonwealth badminton bronze medal winner, will both participate in the event as speakers.

"As Scotland's University for Sporting Excellence, the University is determined to deliver a bright sporting future for Scotland and we believe this conference will help to foster discussion on the way forward for women in sport," said University of Stirling Sports Union President Rebecca Gracey.

“It will also be a chance for speakers, students and delegates to reflect upon the Commonwealth Games." she added.

The conference will be opened by the Scottish Minister for the Commonwealth Games and Sport, Shona Robison and will also count with the participation of the BBC journalist Alison Walker and Wendy Inglis-Humphrey of Scottish business innovation hub Sporting Chance.

Gerry McCormac, Principal and vice-Chancellor of the University of Stirling, said:

It is also an example of the great work that is being done across the University to advance opportunities for women."

Earlier this year, the project won the 'Achievement of the Year' award at the NUS Women's Awards this April for ‘Leading The Way For Women In Sport’.
