Peruvian institutions sign agreement to tackle racism in football

A new agreement has been signed in Peru by football and government institutions to tackle racism in football as part of wider national plan aimed at raising awareness of racial discrimination and promote the involvement of state institutions and the general public in tackling the problem.

The agreement was signed by the Peruvian Institute of Sport, Football Federation, Association of Professional Football, the Peruvian Ministry of Culture and the Nacional Commission to Prevent Violence at Sports Events and involves a series of preventive actions and sanctioning on discriminatory practices.

Salvador del Solar, Peruvian Ministry of Culture, said: "Racism is not normal and is not ok. Winning a football match or a championship is not more important that respecting the other. If there is an incident at a match, then it needs to be stopped. This is not how we play as a country. We need to win this battle."

"Through this campaign we must stress the compromise that we all have as a society to tackle the issue."

The agreement was signed on the week the country celebrated cultural and linguistic diversity.
