The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during May 2018. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.
All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently in place at UEFA club competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour.
Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

01 May 2018 – Slovakian Cup: ŠK Slovan Bratislava v MFK Ružomberok
ŠK Slovan Bratislava’s Vice-President Ivan Kmotrík shouted ‘Heil Hitler’ and performed a Nazi salute after the match.
05 May 2018 – Royal Excel Mouscron
Royal Excel Mouscron player Omar Govea reported that a member of the club’s coaching staff treating him differently from his teammates was racially motivated.
05 May 2018 – English Women’s FA Cup: Arsenal v Chelsea
A group of activists from Mayday 4 Women distributed transphobic leaflets before the match.
05 May 2018 – FC Lokomotive Leipzig
FC Lokomotive Leipzig’s assistant coach instructed his under-17 team to perform a Nazi salute in a team photo. The club has fired the assistant coach and taken the under-17 team out of competition.
06 May 2018 – Spanish La Liga: FC Barcelona v Real Madrid
A group of FC Barcelona ultras directed racist slurs toward Real Madrid player Marcelo and sang misogynistic chants about Real Madrid during the match.
09 May 2018 – Bulgarian Cup Final: Slavia Sofia v Levski Sofia
Two young Levski Sofia fans were filmed during the Bulgarian Cup Final with one boy performing a Nazi salute and the other displaying a swastika on his chest.
11 May 2018 – Miguel Moreno and FOX Sports News Peru
Comedian Miguel Moreno appeared on FOX Sports news in blackface during a sketch mocking Peruvian footballer Jefferson Farfan.
12 May 2018 – Minerva Punjab FC Owner Ranjit Bajaj
Minerva Punjab FC Owner Ranjit Bajaj racially abused match official Pynskhemhame Mawthoh during an Under-18 Youth League match between Minerva Punjab FC and Aizawl FC.
13 May 2018 – Scottish Premier League: Celtic v Aberdeen
Aberdeen player Shay Long was racially abused by a group of Celtic fans during the match.
15 May 2018 – Argentinian Football Association
The Argentinian FA published a document containing guidelines for players, staff and journalists. They included a misogynistic section on how to pick up Russian women at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
16 May 2018 – UEFA Europa League: Olympique Marseille v Atlético Madrid
A group of Atlético Madrid fans displayed several far-right flags during the Europa League Final against Olympique Marseille.
A report was sent to UEFA for action.
20 May 2018 – Brazilian Serie D: Clube Esportivo Dom Bosco v Corumbaense FC
Dom Bosco player Bruno Felipe racially abused Corumbaense defender Ederson Baptista de Souza (also known as Robinho) during the match.
24 May 2018 – Rudy Landucci and FOX Sports Brasil
Comedian Rudy Landucci appeared on FOX Sports Brasil’s Sacred Game programme in blackface as part of a parody about Palmeiras coach Roger Machado.
28 May 2018 – International Friendly: Italy v Saudi Arabia
A group of Italy fans displayed a racist banner on the return of Mario Balotelli to the Italian national team.
Social Media
A picture of the rising sun flag was displayed on the FIFA World Cup’s instagram account. The picture was removed after complaints had been made.
Sanctions
All India Football Federation Disciplinary Committee: Minerva Punjab FC Owner Ranjit Bajaj
The All Indian Football Federation has banned Minerva Punjab FC Owner Ranjit Bajaj for one year from any football related activities after he racially abused match official Pynskhemhame Mawthoh during a youth league match played on the 12th May 2018.
Bulgarian Football Union: Levski Sofia
Levski Sofia were fined 37,500 Levs (19,173 EUR) after two young Levski Sofia fans were filmed with one performing a Nazi salute and the other bearing a swastika on his chest during the domestic cup final held on the 9th May 2018.
FIFA: Russian Football Union
The Russian Football Union were fined 30,000 CHF (25,000 EUR) after a group of Russia fans directed monkey chants towards French players Paul Pogba and Ousmane Dembele during a friendly played on the 27th March 2018.
OFC: Lautoka FC’s Samuela Drudru
Lautoka FC player Samuela Drudru was fined NZ$7500 (FJ$10,869.94) and received a seven match ban for racist comments he made towards the match official during the OFC Champions League match against Marist FC on the 22nd April 2018.
Spanish Government Commission on Racism, Violence, Xenophobia and Intolerance in Sport: Atlético Madrid fan
The Commission has banned an Atlético Madrid fan from all sporting events for one year and fined them €3,001 after they launched a Swastika balloon during a league match against Real Betis played on the 22nd April 2018.
