List of incidents reported to Fare during February 2020

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during February 2020. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently at place at UEFA club and national team competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare sends trained international observers to record discriminatory incidents at UEFA Champions League, Europa League, European Qualifiers and UEFA EURO 2020 as well as FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Preliminary Competition.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

01 February 2020 – English Premier League – West Ham v Brighton & Hove Albion

Several West Ham supporters have been arrested for homophobic chanting directed at Brighton fans.

04 February 2020 – German Cup DFB Pokal - Schalke 04 v Hertha BS

Schalke fans racially abused Hertha player Jordan Torunarigha.

08 February 2020 – English FA Vase Cup - Atherstone Town v Stafford Town

Atherstone Town fans directed racist abuse at Stafford Town goalkeeper Samuel Amedu.

08 February 2020 – English League Two – Bradford City v Grimsby Town

Grimsby Town fans chanted racist chants and name of the British far-right figure Tommy Robinson.

08 February 2020 – Spanish La Liga - Espanyol - RCD Mallorca

Dani Pastor, the fitness coach at Mallorca, was caught on camera pulling his eyes back in a racist ‘slant-eyed’ gesture to allegedly signal to Japanese player Takefusa Kubo that he should be ready to come onto the pitch as a substitute for an injured teammate.

13 February 2020 - Dutch Cup - Go Ahead Eagles v FC Utrecht

Away Utrecht fans chanted a homophobic song directed at Eagles fans during the second half.

14 February 2020 - German Third League - Preussen Munster v Wurzburger Kickers

Würzburger Kickers defender Leroy Kwadwo was racially abused by an individual Munster supporter. Referee Katrin Rafalski stopped the match in the 88th minute after being informed of the racist abuse by Kwadwo. It was followed by a stadium announcement against the abuse and the “Nazis out!” chants from the fans who pointed at the perpetrator to the police.

14 February 2020 – Scottish Premiership – Kilmarnock v Rangers

Rangers player Alfredo Morelos was subjected to racist abuse by Kilmarnock fans.

15 February 2020 – English FA Vase Cup - Atherstone Town v Worcester City

Atherstone fans directed homophobic and racist abuse at Worcester fans and players.

15 February 2020 – Brazilian Paulista championship - São Paulo vs Corinthians

São Paulo fans directed homophobic chants at Corinthians goalkeeper. The referee ordered a stadium announcement to stop the abuse.

16 February 2020 – Portuguese Premier League - Vitoria Guimaraes v Porto

Porto striker Moussa Marega was racially abused by Vitoria Guimaraes fans and walked off the pitch in protest. Atherstone Town coaching staff have quit the club in protest over continued racism by their fans.

16 February 2020 – Spanish Segunda B - CF Fuenlabrada v CD Lugo

Lugo winger Yanis Rahmani was racially abused by Fuenlabrada fans.

17 February 2020 – English Premier League – Chelsea v Man United

Man United fans chanted a homophobic chant about Chelsea.

20 February 2020 – UEFA Europa League – Wolves v Espanyol

An individual Espanyol fan was arrested by English police for directing racist abuse at Wolves player Adama Traore.

22 February 2020 – English National League - Gateshead FC v Guiseley AFC

Gateshead fans directed racist abuse at Guiseley AFC player Gabriel Johnson.

22 February 2020 – Israeli top league (Ligat Ha'al) - Hapoel Kiryat Shmona - Maccabi Netanya FC

The Netanya goalkeeper Dani Amos received homophobic chanting from Kiryat Shmona fans.

22 February 2020 – Portuguese Amateur Youth League - FC Pedras Rubras U13 v Leça do Balio U13

Racist abuse by Pedras Rubas player against Leça do Balio's Pete Carvalho Djob, who he called a "monkey."

23 February 2020 – Spanish Segunda B – UD Ibiza v Sporting Gijon B

After the match the ball boys sent Sporting Gijon B player Christian Joel a video calling him an 'immigrant' with the shirt that he presented them after the final whistle.

26 February 2020 – English Championship – Millwall v Birmingham City

Birmingham winger Jeremie Bela was racially abused by a Millwall fan.

29 February 2020 – English Southern Counties East Football League - Croydon v Kennington

The match was abandoned by the referee following a member of the Kennington side allegedly made a racially abusive remark towards the referee, prompting the match official to stop the game.

29 February 2020 – Bulgarian Top League (Prva) – Tsarsko Selo v CSKA Sofia

Tsarsko Selo's Congolese striker Dylan Bahamboula was subjected to racist abuse by CSKA Sofia fans.

29 February 2020 - Israeli top league (Ligat Ha'al) - Maccabi Netanya FC v Maccabi Tel-Aviv

Maccabi supporters chanted homophobic chants towards Netanya goalkeeper Dani Amos throughout the match who wore boots featuring a rainbow flag in support of the LGBT+ community. Amos reported the incident to the referee and the homophobic incident was reflected in the referee’s official report for the first time in Israel.

01 February 2020 – Turkey/ Social media – Trabzonspor

Trabzonspor player John Obi Mikel racially abused on social media following the game against Fenerbahce on 01 February 2020.

06 February 2020 – Tottenham – Dele Alli

Tottenham player Dele Alli posted several videos on Snapchat appearing to be mocking several Chinese people over Coronavirus infection while waiting at the airport lounge.

15 February 2020 – BBC – Craig Ramage

Former Derby midfielder Craig Ramage was speaking on BBC Radio Derby's Sportscene podcast after the Rams' 1-1 draw with Huddersfield. He told the podcast: "When I look over and I look at certain players, their body language, their stance, the way they act, you just feel, 'whoa, hold on a minute - he needs pulling down a peg or two. So I'd probably say that about all the young black lads."
BBC have cut ties with Ramage as a result of this racist stereotyping.

06 February 2020 – England police

Bournemouth fan has been banned from football for three years after pleading guilty to chanting racist abuse at a Tottenham match on 30 November 2020.

06 February 2020 – England police

A Wolves fan was found guilty of racist abuse directed at Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham during Wolves v Chelsea match on 14 September last year.

09 February 2020 – Bulgarian court

Bulgarian fan from Plovdiv was handed a two-year stadium ban by court for performing Nazi salutes and monkey chants along with dozens other Bulgaria fans during Bulgaria v England EQ match on 14 October 2019.

11 February 2020 – German FA – Schalke 04

Schalke were handed a 50,000 Euro fine by the DFB for their fans racist abuse at Hertha’s Jordan Torunarigha on 04 February 2020. Schalke will use up to 16,000 Euros of their fine to fund anti-discrimination workshops for their fans rather than paying the whole amount to the DFB.

13 February 2020 – Dutch FA (KNVB) – Den Bosch

The KNVB Disciplinary have sanctioned Den Bosch with partial stadium closure for two matches with another match deferred on probation. FC Den Bosch have banned one individual fan over the racist incident during Den Bosch v Excelsior on 17 November 2019.

14 February 2020 – Italy - Cagliari

Cagliari announced they issued life bans to three supporters this season for racial and offensive language.

18 February 2020 – USA Major League Soccer FC Cincinnati – Ron Jans

FC Cincinnati head coach Ron Jans forced to resign following racist comments.

21 February 2020 – English FA – Championship - Barnsley

Barnsley fined £20,000 and told to implement an action plan after Stoke City player James McClean was abused with sectarian chants by fans at Championship match on 09 November 2019.

28 February 2020 – English FA –Championship – Leeds – Kiko Casilla

Leeds goalkeeper Kiko Casilla was banned for eight matches by the English FA disciplinary confirming that Leeds goalkeeper called Charlton striker Jonathan Leko “a fucking n-word” during Charlton v Leeds on 28 September 2019.
