Incidents reported to Fare during September 2014

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during September 2014. The list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eye-witness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently at place at UEFA club competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

04 September 2014 - Copa Sudamericana: Club Deportivo Godoy Cruz v River Plate

A group of River Plate fans chanted xenophobic abuse targeting Bolivian and Paraguayan people.

River Plate have been fined €23.440 by CONMEBOL and forbidden to sell tickets for the next three CONMEBOL matches as a visitor.

07 September 2014 - Brazilian Série D: Tombense-MG v Operário-MT

Operário-MT goalkeeper Igor Lemos Cajuhy was allegedly racially abused by a group of Tombense supporters.

A complaint was filed by Operário. The police and the highest sports tribunal both opened investigations on the case.

08 September 2014 – UEFA EURO 2016 Qualifiers: Ukraine v Slovakia

A group of Ukrainian fans displayed far-right symbols.

Details of the incident were passed to UEFA for action.

09 September 2014 – UEFA EURO 2016 Qualifiers: Croatia v Malta

A group of Croatian fans chanted homophobic abuse.

Details of the incident were passed to UEFA for action.

13 September 2014 – Greek Super League: Veria FC v AO Kerkyra

AO Kerkyra player Horacio Cardozo was racially abused by FC Veria striker Nicolao Manuel Dumitru Cardoso.

14 September 2014 – Scottish Professional Football League: Celtic v Aberdeen

Celtic winger Aleksandar Tonev allegedly racially abused Aberdeen defender Shay Logan.

The Scottish FA have launched an investigation.

15 September 2014 – Facebook: Mexican politician Carlos Manuel Trevino Nunez

Mexican politician Carlos Manuel Treviño Núñez wrote a diatribe on Facebook in which he racially abused Querétaro Brazilian midfielder Ronaldinho.

16 September 2014 – English League One: Gillingham v Peterborough

A fan of Gillingham has allegedly racially abused a Peterborough player.

18 September 2014 – Brazilian Série A: Grêmio v Santos

Grêmio goalkeeper Aranha was subjected to homophobic chants by Santos fans.

18 September 2014 – UEFA Europa League: FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk v F.C. Internazionale Milano

A group of FC Dnipro supporters displayed far-right symbols.

Details of the incident were passed to UEFA for action.

FC Dnipro have been sanctioned by UEFA with a partial stadium closure for their next UEFA Europa League home match and fined €24,000.

18 September 2014 – UEFA Europa League: FC Metalist Kharkiv v Trabzonspor A.Ş.

A group of FC Metalist fans displayed far-right symbols.

Details of the incident were passed to UEFA for action.

18 September 2014 – UEFA Europa League: FK Partizan v Tottenham Hotspur FC

A group of FK Partizan fans displayed an anti-Semitic banner.

Details of the incident were passed to UEFA for action.

FK Partizan have been sanctioned by UEFA with a partial stadium closure for their next UEFA Europa League home match and fined €40,000

19 September 2014 – UEFA Champions League: AS Roma v PFC CSKA Moskva

A group of CSKA fans displayed several banners featuring neo-Nazi symbols.

Details of the incident were passed to UEFA for action.

CSKA have been ordered to play their next three UEFA competition home matches behind closed doors.

The Russian team have also been fined €200,000 and banned from selling tickets to their fans for the next two UEFA Champions League group stage games as the visiting side.

20 September 2014 – English Championship: Norwich City FC v Birmingham City

A Norwich City FC fan directed homophobic abuse at Birmingham players.

21 September 2014 – Brazilian Série A: Corinthians v São Paulo

São Paulo FC goalkeeper Denis de Matos was allegedly subjected to homophobic chants by Corinthians fans.

São Paulo supporters also chanted homophobic abuse at Corinthians fans in general and, in particularly to a number of the club’s former players.

21 September 2014 – Twitter

Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli was racially abused on Twitter.

Merseyside police launched an investigation.

21 September 2014 – Bulgarian A Football Group: Levski v Ludogorets

Levski fans displayed a racist banner and a number of neo-Nazi symbols.

The Bulgarian Football Union fined Levski with €9,000.

24 September 2014 – Dutch KNVB Cup:De Dijk v Fortuna Sittard

Fortuna player Seku Conneh was racially abused by a group of De Dijk supporters.

27 September 2014 – Dutch Eredivisie: Go Ahead Eagles v Feyenoord

Feyenoord player Collin Kazim-Richards was racially abused by a group of Go Ahead fans.

27 September 2014 – Twitter: Rosh Hashanah

Following a series of anti-Semitic messages, Liverpool FC deleted a tweet, in which the club wished its Jewish supporters a happy Rosh Hashanah.

21 September 2014 – Brazilian Série B: Avaí FC v Boa Esporte Clube Brasil

Boa Esporte forward Valmir Aparecido Franci de Campos Junior, known as Francis, was allegedly racially abused by Avaí defender Antônio Carlos.

The incident was reported to the police.

30 September 2014 – Asian Football Confederation Champions League: Al Ain v Al Hilal

Al Ain striker Asamoah Gyan was allegedly racially abused by Al Hilal Romanian midfielder Mihai Pintilii.

30 September 2014 – Mexican Liga Mx: León v Monterrey

A group of León fans racially abused Monterey Colombian forward Dorlan Pabón
