Incidents reported to FARE during September 2013

The following list of incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia has been reported to Fare during August 2013. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to FARE’s attention through eye- witness or media accounts. FARE has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members. The general public can keep us informed of national level incidents through info@farenet.org.

02 September 2013 – Croatia: HNK Rijeka v NK Lokomotiva

The ultras group of HNK Rijeka Armada sang homophobic slurs targeting the Croatian Football Federation.

06 September 2013 – FIFA World Cup qualifier: Germany v Austria

Homophobic chants targeting the German Football Association were sung by a large number of Austrian fans.

Details of the incident were passed to FIFA for action.

06 September 2013 - FIFA World Cup qualifier: Poland v Montenegro

Display of far-right banner from Montenegro supporters.

06 September 2013 - FIFA World Cup qualifier: Romania v Hungary

Far-right chants from Romanian supporters and racist t-shirts being worn by Hungarian fans were reported.

06 September 2013 – FIFA World Cup qualifier: Serbia v Croatia

The match was marked by far-right and racist incidents. Several far-right materials were displayed; nationalist and racist chants targeted the Albanian and Croatian people and the Croatian international of Brazilian origin Eduardo Da Silva.

Two announcements were made over the stadium’s tannoy system demanding supporters to stop the discriminatory behaviour which were met with booing and disapproval.

06 September 2013 – FIFA World Cup qualifier: Ukraine v San Marino

Nazi salutes and racist monkey noises targeting Edmar, the Ukrainian international of Brazilian origin, were made by a group of Ukrainian fans. Neo-nazi banners were on display.

Details of the incident were passed to FIFA for action. FIFA ordered the Ukrainian National team to play their next match in the preliminary competition for the 2014 FIFA World Cup behind closed doors and banned the team from playing in the Arena Lviv stadium for the whole duration of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Ukrainian Federation was also fined € 36,692. The sanction was suspended pending an appeal hearing.

06 September 2013 – Hungary: Budapest Honvéd FC

Budapest Honvéd FC have been ordered to play their next home game behind closed doors and were fined €50,000 for fans’ racism.

UEFA also decided to enforce a suspended sanction against Honvéd from August 2008, which related to a previous incident. The sanction is to play one UEFA competition match behind closed doors.

The sanction relates to incidents reported during the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round, first and second legs played against FK Vojvodina (18/07/13 and 25/07/13).

06 September 2013 – Poland: KKS Lech Poznań

KKS Lech Poznań have been sanctioned for fans’ racist behaviour with a stadium partial closure during the next UEFA competition match the club hosts and have been fined €5,000.

The sanction relates to incidents of racism reported during the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round, second leg played against VMFD Žalgiris (08/08/13).

06 September 2013 – Poland: GKS Piast Gliwice

GKS Piast Gliwice have been sanctioned for fans racism with a stadium partial closure during the next UEFA competition home match and fined €5,000.

The sanction relates to incidents reported during the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round, second leg played against Qarabağ FK (25/07/13).

10 September 2013 - FIFA World Cup qualifier: Romania v Turkey

Display of far-right material by Romanian supporters.

Details of the incident were passed to FIFA for action.

10 September 2013 – FIFA World Cup qualifier: FYR Macedonia v Scotland

Racist booing targeted at the Scottish striker Anya.

Details of the incident were passed to FIFA for action.

14 September 2013 – England: Sleaford Town v Huntingdon FC

Huntingdon FC released a statement reporting that the club’s players Medwynter and Jamie Graham were targeted with racist comments by Sleaford fans.

14 September 2013 – Germany: Eintracht Frankfurt II v Kickers Offenbach

During the Regionalliga Südwest,fourth league of German football,fans of Offenbach fans sung anti-Semitic and far-right chants.

14 September 2013 – Italy: Inter Milan v Juventus

Inter Milan fans racially abused the Juventus players Paul Pogba and Kwadwo Asamoah.

The Italian FA sanctioned the club with closure of the Curva Nord for the next home match.

15 September 2013 – Ukraine: Metalist Kharkiv v Dynamo Kyiv

During the match between the two teams fans of Metalist Kharkiv displayed a banner with neo-Nazi code '88' styled as bombs falling on the mosque.

14 September 2013 – Russia: Zenit St. Petersbourg v Terek Groznyi

Zenit supporters burned a Chechnya flag.

The perpetrator was charged with breaching the fire safety regulations and fined €20.

19 September 2013 – UEFA Europa League: GNK Dinamo Zagreb v Chornomorets Odesa

Supporters of GNK Dinamo chanted racist slurs.

19 September 2013 – UEFA Europa League: SS Lazio v Legia Warszawa

Display of a racist banner by Legia supporters. SS Lazio supporters performed racist chants against the Slavic people.

Details of the incident were passed to UEFA for action.

SS Lazio have been ordered to play their next home match in UEFA competition behind closed doors and received a €40,000 fine.

22 September 2013 – Iceland: Keflavík v ÍBV

A Keflavík supporter challenged the referee’s decision of not showing a red card to ÍBV player Mawejje by shouting "reka negrann útaf" which is a racial insult.

24 September 2013 – Portugal: SL Benfica v FC Porto (20 April 2011)

FC Porto have made an official complaint to the Portuguese Football Federation and UEFA denouncing racist comments that Nuno Lobo, current President of the Lisbon’s Football Association, made on his Facebook timeline targeting the former Porto player Hulk.

The comments were allegedly made in 2011 during the match between the two teams.

25 September 2013 – Croatia: GNK Dinamo Zagreb

GNK Dinamo Zagreb have been ordered to play two home UEFA competition matches behind closed doors, with half of the suspension (one game) deferred for a probationary period of five years and have been fined €70,250 for fans racist behaviour.

The sanction relates to incidents reported during the UEFA Champions League play-off second leg against FK Austria Wien (27/08/13) and third qualifying round first leg played against FC Sheriff (30/07/13).

29 September 2013 – Ukraine: FC Karpaty Lviv v Tavria Simferopol

Fans of FC Karpaty Lviv displayed a banner ”Give back our national team” with portraits of foreign-born Ukraine internationals Edmar and Devich with 'STOP' inscriptions.
