The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during June 2014. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts. Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

07 June 2014 – FIFA international friendly: Argentina v Slovenia

A group of Slovenian fans displayed a far-right flag.

08 June 2014 – United States Major League Soccer: LA Galaxy v Chivas USA

Supporters of Chivas USA and the team’s Mexican striker Erick Torres were subjected to xenophobic abuse by LA Galaxy fans.

10 June 2014 – Brazilian Brasileirão Série A: Botafogo v Palmeiras

Botafogo forward Emerson Sheik was allegedly subjected to homophobic abuse by the Palmeiras center back Lucimar Ferreira da Silva, also known as Lúcio.

10 June 2014 – Estonian Premium Liiga: FC Flora v Nõmme Kalju FC

A group of FC Flora fans displayed several far-right banners styled as German ‘Reichskriegsflagge' featuring an Odal rune.

12 June 2014 – FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014: Brazil v Croatia

A group of Croatia fans displayed a far-right banner.

Details of the incident were passed to FIFA for action. FIFA opened proceedings but dismissed the charges.

13 June 2014 – FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014: Mexico v Cameroon

A group of Mexico fans chanted homophobic abuse every time the Cameroonian goalkeeper Charles Itandje took a goal kick.

Details of the incident were passed to FIFA for action. FIFA opened proceedings but dismissed the charges.

13 June 2014 – FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014: Spain v Netherlands

Diego Costa was subjected to homophobic abuse by a group of Brazilian fans.

16 June 2014 – FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014: Germany v Portugal

A Germany fan displayed a far-right flag.

Details of the incident were passed to FIFA for action. FIFA opened proceedings but dismissed the charges.

17 June 2014 – FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014: Brazil v Mexico

A group of Mexico and Brazil supporters chanted homophobic abuse every time the opposition team’s goalkeeper kicked the ball.

17 June 2014 – FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014: Russia v South Korea

A group of Russian fans displayed a neo-Nazi banner.

Details of the incident were passed to FIFA for action. FIFA opened proceedings but later dismissed the charges.

19 June 2014 - FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014: Uruguay v England

An England supporter was racially abused by another England fan.

A third England fan was also subjected to racist abuse by group of supporters attending the game. The fan was bitten and victim of physical violence.

19 June 2014 – FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014: Colombia v Ivory Coast

A reportedly Colombian fan was photographed wearing a costume prominently decorated with swastikas.

20 June 2014 - FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014: Switzerland v France

Two supporters of France went to the stadium reportedly dressed up as ‘black maids’, wearing black face make-up.

21 June 2014 - FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014: Germany v Ghana

A streaker interrupted the match with several far-right and neo-Nazi codes written on his chest and back.

A group of German fans entered the stadium blackfaced and wearing T-shirts with Ghana written on them.

FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014: Belgium

A Belgian supporter was pictured inside a stadium with his face painted in black.

23 June 2014 – English Premier League: FC Everton

Everton have banned a supporter for tweeting racist and homophobic comments to another fan.

23 June 2014 – Netherlands: De Telegraaf

The sports editor of Dutch newspaper, De Telegraaf, made a racist remark towards the Gambian referee Bakary Gamassa.

He said: ‘[…] It is clear the FIFA doesn’t see the importance of this match, they appoint someone from Africa, well, that’s contempt for The Netherlands and Chile, because you just need an excellent referee and this man hasn’t refereed a single match just for nothing […].’

23 June 2014 – Italy: Alberto Ferrarini

Italy’s team psychologist Alberto Ferrarini racially abused Mario Balotelli when he suggested the player were “priviledged” and only played in the national team because he is black.

Alberto Ferrarini wrote: "If you were like me, a white man, today you would not be in the national team... as a white guy you would have been a good player and that's all.”

26 June 2014 – Finland: Mika Lehkosuo

Helsinki HJK coach and football commentator, Mika Lehkosuo, deployed a Nazi slogan used in concentration camps when interviewed on national TV.

26 June 2014 - FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014: Algeria v Russia

A Russian fan displayed a banner featuring a neo-Nazi symbol.
