Incidents reported to Fare during January and February 2014

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during January and February 2014. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eye-witness or media accounts. Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

January 2014

15 January 2014 – Poland: Janusz Wojcik
The former Polish national team manager Janusz Wojcik made racist and sexist remarks in an interview to a Polish news website.

On a game played between Poland and Ivory Coast in 2010, Wojcik said:

“The day before the game those black wild people saw white girls so they were too hot during the game”.

26 January 2014 – Greek Superleague: Skoda Xanthi v Olympiacos FC
Monkey chants from a group of Skoda Xanthi fans targeted Olympiacos Cameroonian player Gaëtan Bong.

The player reported the incident at the end of the match.

February 2014

04 February 2014 – Wales U-19: Prestatyn v Gap Connah
Prestatyn’s Chris Marsden racially abused Gap Connah’s Quay player Abe Dobson during the U-19 match between the two sides.

The player was suspended by the Welsh Football Association and released from his club.

05 February 2014 – Spanish Copa del Rey: Real Madrid v Atlético Madrid
Real Madrid defender Marcelo was racially abused by a group of Atlético Madrid supporters while he was warming down after the match.

07 February 2014 – Malaysia Super League: Pahang FA v Johor Darul Takzim
Pahang FA Jamaican defender Damion Stewart was racially abused by Johor Darul Takzim’s players Pablo Aimar and Luciano Figueroa.

A complaint of the incident was sent by the player’s club to the Football Association of Malaysia.

8 February 2014 – Mexican Torneo Clausura: Club León v Pumas UNAM
León Colombian players Eisner Loboa and Franco Arizala were racially abused with monkey chants by members of the Pumas fan group 'La Rebel'.

12 February 2014 – Copa Libertadores: Real Garcilaso v Cruzeiro
Cruzeiro player Paulo César Fonseca do Nascimento, known as Tinga, was racially abused with monkey chants by a number of Real Garcilaso supporters.

Real Garcilaso were fined $12,000 by CONMEBOL and warned that if another racist incidente takes place in the future, the stadium will be closed.

14 February 2014 – Peruvian Copa Inca: Universitario vs. César Vallejo
A group of fans of Universitario racially abused César Vallejo Panamanian player Luis Tejada.

The match was suspended to call a halt to the abuse.

The incident is under investigation.

15 February 2014 – Mexican Liga MX: Pachuca v Atlante
A group of Atlante fans racially abused the Ecuadorian players of Pachuca Walter Ayoví and Enner Valencia.

21 February 2014 – Croatian Prva HNL: NK Hrvatski Dragovoljac v GNK Dinamo
Anti-Roma and homophobic abuse from Dinamo supporters.

22 February 2014 – Croatian Prva HNL: NK Lokomotiva v HNK Hajduk
Supporters of the Hajduk fan group Torcida chanted racist and anti-Roma remarks targeting the referee and the Croatian Football Federation.

22 February 2014 – English Premier League: Manchester City v Stoke City
Three fans have been arrested over alleged racist chanting during Manchester City’s match against Stoke City.

The two men and a youth who are believed to be Stoke supporters have now been banned by criminal authorities from entering Greater Manchester Police force area while investigations are ongoing.

22 February 2014 – German Bundesliga: Hamburger SV v Borussia Dortmund
A Borussia Dortmund fan shouted "Sieg Heil" during a minute's silence before the match kick-off.

The fan was given a three-year nationwide stadium ban and Borussia Dortmund imposed a six-year stadium ban from the club's ground.

23 February 2014 – Luxembourg Third Provincial A: Toernich v Rachecourt
The head coach of Toernich Mehdi El Alaoui and his players were racially abused by fans.

Alaoui resigned after the incident.

23 February 2014 – Peruvian Copa Inca: Sporting Cristal v León de Huánuco
A group of León de Huánuco fans racially abused Sporting Cristal player Luis Advíncula.

26 February 2014 – UEFA Champions League: Galatasaray Istanbul v Chelsea FC
A group of Chelsea fans reportedly chanted Islamophobic slurs directed at the home team fans.

26 February 2014 – UEFA Youth League: Atlético de Madrid v Manchester City
Members of the Spanish side’s fan group Frente Atlético allegedly abused Manchester City player Devante Cole.

UEFA announced that disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Club Atlético de Madrid Youth for improper conduct of the team and racist behaviour of their supporters.

Club Atlético de Madrid Youth were sanctioned with a partial stadium closure at their next UEFA Youth League home match and fined €10,000 for improper conduct of the team and racist behaviour of their supporters.

28 February 2014 – UEFA Futsal EURO 2014: Belgium v Romania
Belgium futsal player Omar Rahou preformed the “quenelle” gesture.

The player has been banned for ten UEFA games.
