Incidents reported to Fare during August 2014

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during August 2014. The list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eye-witness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently at place at UEFA club competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

02 August 2014 – German 3rd Bundesliga: SC Preußen Münster v VfB Stuttgart 2

A fan of SC Preußen Münster racially abused the team’s coach Babacar N‘Diaye.

03 August 2014 – Croatian Prva Liga : NK Osijek v RNK SPLIT

A group of NK Osijek fans displayed far-right symbols and chanted anti-Roma abuse.

06 August 2014 – UEFA Champions League: APOEL FC v HJK Helsinki

A group of APOEL fans displayed a number of far-right banners.

06 August 2014 – Spain: Torrenueva

A sexist advertisement banner was displayed at local football tournament.

10 August 2014 – German 3rd Bundesliga: SC Fortuna Köln v Chemnitzer FC

A group of Chemnitzer fans displayed a far-right flag.

10 August 2014 – English Sky Bet Championship: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Norwich City

A group of Norwich supporters allegedly subjected a Wolverhampton player to racial abuse.

10 August 2014 – Pre-season friendly, Germany: Hannover 96 v Lazio

The group “Legion Germania” constituted of supporters of BFC Dynamo, Lok Leipzig and Lazio chanted far-right and anti-Semitic slogans.

10 August 2014 – Russian Premier League: Dinamo Moskva v Spartak Moskva

Dinamo Moskva defender Chris Samba was racially abused by a group of Spartak Moskva fans.

10 August 2014 – Ukrainian League 1: FC Mykolayiv v FC Ternopil

Players of FC Mykolaiyv displayed far-right symbols on the pitch before the match kick-off.

11 August 2014 – Argentinian League 1: Gimnasia LP v Club Atlético River Plate

The Argentinian sports commentator of Radio Revolución, Alberto Raimundi, racially abused Colombian River Plate forward Teófilo Gutiérrez.

15 August 2014 – Czech 1. Liga: Sparta Praha v Banik Ostrava

Groups of both Sparta Praha and Banik Ostrava fans performed homophobic choreographies and displayed anti-gay banners.

17 August 2014 – Russian Premier League: Arsenal Tula v Dinamo Moskva

A group of Dinamo Moskva supporters displayed several far-right and neo-Nazi symbols.

19 August 2014 – UEFA Champions League: FC Steaua Bucureşti v PFC Ludogorets Razgrad

A group of Steaua fans displayed a far-right flag and chanted anti-Roma abuse.

20 August 2014 – Italy: Italian Football Federation President Carlo Tavecchio

UEFA opened disciplinary investigations against Italian Football Federation President Carlo Tavecchio following his racist remarks during a summer summit during the electoral campaign for the FIGC president position.

20 August 2014 – Malaysian FA Cup: Perak v Sarawak FA

Players of Sarawak were allegedly racially abused by Perak team officials.

A group of Perak fans targeted Sarawak winger Suppiah Chanturu with racist abuse.

Perak fans were asked to stay away from next match while the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) investigates allegations of racism.

21 August 2014 – UEFA Europa League: FC Dinamo Moskva v AC Omonia

A group of Dinamo Moskva fans chanted far-right slogans.

Details of the incident were passed to UEFA for action.

23 August 2014 – Japanse J-League: Yokohama F Marinos v Kawasaki Frontale

A Yokohama fan waved a banana at the Brazilian Kawasaki Frontale player Renato Calixto.

The perpetrator was banned indefinitely and the Japanese Professional Football League fined Yokohama € 36,963 for the racist incident.

23 August 2014 – Ukrainian Cup: FC Chayka v FC Karpaty Lviv

A group of Karpaty Lviv fans displayed a number of far-right symbols.

26 August 2014 – Ireland: Player Tommy McGuigan

Former Tyrone GAA player Tommy McGuigan sent an anti-Semitic tweet urging people to “punch a Jew”.

The player is being investigated for potential hate crime and might face criminal charges over the post.

28 August 2014 – Brazilian Cup: Grêmio v Santos FC

Santos FC goalkeeper Aranha was racially abused by Grêmio supporters.

Grêmio has subsequently banned 5 fans.

Brazilian sports tribunal has subsequently disqualified Grêmio from the Brazil Cup and fined the club €17,000. The verdict also included a ban from stadiums for 720 days for those fans already identified and those that may still be identified responsible for the racist abuse.

The court also banned the match referee for 90 days and fined him €550 for not taking the correct action and for not properly reporting the incident in his match report. His assistants were banned for 60 days and fined €340.

27 August 2014 – UEFA Champions League: PFC Ludogorets Razgrad v FC Steaua Bucureşti

A group of Ludogorets fans chanted anti-Roma slogans targeting Steaua supporters.

Steaua fans displayed a number of far-right and neo-Nazi symbols and directed discriminatory chants at Ludogorets fans.

28 August 2014 – UEFA Europa League: Debreceni VSC v BSC Young Boys

A group of Debreceni VSC fans performed Nazi salutes multiple times throughout the match.

28 August 2014 – UEFA Europa League: FC Metalist Kharkiv v Ruch Chorzów

A group of Metalist supporters displayed far-right symbols.

29 August 2014 – Spanish Primera Division: Valencia v Malaga

A group of Valencia fans directed racist abuse towards Malaga goalkeeper Carlos Kameni.
