Incidents reported to Fare during April 2014

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during April 2014. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eye-witness or media accounts. Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

02 April 2014 – UEFA Champions League: Paris SG v Chelsea FC

Pre-match incidents, in which Chelsea fans preformed racist chants, were reported to have taken place in the centre of Paris.

During the match, Paris SG fans verbally abused and threw objects at a disabled group of Chelsea FC supporters and Chelsea fans displayed a banner with a neo-Nazi symbol.

Details of the two incidents were passed to UEFA for action.

05 April 2014 – Croatian Football League: Zadar v GNK Dinamo

A group of GNK Dinamo fans chanted homophobic and anti-Roma chants throughout the match.

05 April 2014 – New Zealand Capital Football 04: Wellington United Arms v Kapiti Coast United reserves

A Wellington United player made monkey noises towards one of Kapiti Coast’s African players.

The perpetrator was sent off by the referee and suspended for 10 matches by the regional governing body, Capital Football.

06 April 2014 – Polish Ekstraklasa: Legia Warsaw v Zawisza Bydgoszcz

A group of Legia Warsaw fans displayed a neo-Nazi banner.

06 April 2014 – Finnish Premier League: Juha Malinen

Rovaniemen Palloseura’s head coach Juha Malinen made racist remarks by highlighting the inexistence of black players in his team, in an interview to a leading Finnish newspaper.

06 April 2014 – Scottish Premiership: Leigh Griffiths

Scottish FA launched an investigation into Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths alleged racist chanting.

The player has reportedly joined Hibernians’ fans in singing a song calling the former Hearts player Rudi Skacel "a refugee", on 30 March.

06 April 2014 - Brazilian Mineiro Championship: Atlético-MG v Cruzeiro

Fans of Atlético directed homophobic abuse at Cruzeiro player Fabio Maciel.

09 April 2014 – English League One: Colin Kazim-Richards

Colin Kazim-Richards, then player of Bury, was found guilty by court of making a homophobic gesture at Brighton and Hove Albion fans during a League One match on 12 February 2013.

The player was fined €900.

10 April 2014 – Brazilian Cup: Paraná v São Bernardo

São Bernardo’s player Marino da Silva was racially abused by two fans of Paraná after the player was booked and sent off.

12 April 2014 - English Calor League Division One South and West FA: Taunton Town v Mangotsfield

Players of Mangotsfield were allegedly racially abused by people attending the match on 12 April 2014.

12 April 2014 – Spanish La Liga BBVA: Neymar Jr

FC Barcelona player Neymar was racially abused with monkey chants by the club’s fans when the team returned to Camp Nou after an away league match against Granada.

12 April 2014 – Scottish Cup: Rangers v Dundee United

A group of Rangers fans sung a sectarian song shortly before the match kick-off.

12 April 2014 – Ukrainian Premier League: Karpaty Lviv v Dynamo Kyiv

A group of Karpaty Lviv supporters displayed a far-right banner.

15 April 2014 – Brazil Parana state league: Lourival Santos

TV channel Rede Massa’s commentator Lourival Santos was detained and questioned by the Brazilian police on racism charges after allegedly calling Londrina’s player Maicon Silva monkey while on air.

16 April 2014 – Spanish Copa del Rey: Real Madrid v FC Barcelona

A group of Real Madrid fans hung a neo-Nazi flag in the club’s fan zone in the vicinity of the stadium before the match.

Details of the incident were passed to the Royal Spanish Football Federation for action.

16 April 2014 – Greek Football Cup: PAOK FC v Olympiacos Piraeus FC

A group of PAOK FC fans racially abused Olympiacos Piraeus FC Brazilian player Leandro Salino.

Details of the incident were passed to the Hellenic Football Federation for action.

16 April 2014 – Ukrainian Premier League: Dynamo Kyiv v Shakhtar Donetsk

A group of Dynamo Kyiv fans wore pointed hats in a Ku Klux Klan style.

17 April 2014 – Polish Ekstraliga: Czarni Sosnowiec v Widok Lublin

A group of Czarni Sosnowiec fans displayed a far-right flag.

17 April 2014 – Romanian Cup: Dinamo Bucharest v Steaua Bucharest

A group of Steaua Bucharest supporters displayed a far-right flag.

17 April 2014 – Swedish Allsvenskan League

A fan of AIK Fotboll was found guilty of charges of racism, by a Swedish court, regarding an incident during a match on 16 May 2012.

19 April 2014 – Bulgarian A Football Group: Lokomotiv Plovdiv v Botev Plovdiv

Lokomotiv Plovdiv fans threw a banana onto the pitch towards Botev Plovdiv player Vander Sacramento Vieira.

The player handed the banana to the referee, Georgi Kabakov, who passed it to the fourth official.

Details of the incident were passed to the Bulgarian Football Union for action.

20 April 2014 – Peruvian Copa Inca: León de Huánuco v Juan Aurich

Juan Aurich’s defender Jair Céspedes was racially abused by a group of León de Huánuco fans.

The Peruvian Professional Football Commission of Justice sanctioned León de Huánuco with one next match to be played behind closed doors and a fine of €2,890.

19 April 2014 – Polish Druga Liga: Pogoń Siedlce v Stal Mielec

A group of Pogoń Siedlce fans displayed a far-right banner.

21 April 2014 - Bulgarian A Football Group: PFC Levski Sofia v PFC CSKA Sofia

Fans of PFC Levski Sofia threw a banana skin towards PFC CSKA Sofia player Jackson Mendy when the teams were leaving the pitch.

The action was followed by monkey noises and gestures.

Details of the incident were passed to the Bulgarian Football Union for action.

23 April 2014 – English Premier League: Yannick Sagbo

Hull City player Yannick Sagbo was fined €18,200 by the English Football Association for supporting the ‘quenelle’ gesture, which is described as an inverted Nazi salute, on Twitter.

23 April 2014 – Peruvian Primera División: Real Garcilaso

Real Garcilaso have been sanctioned by the Peruvian Professional Football Commission of Justice with one next match behind closed doors, for putting up a picture on their official website, in which the club Alianza Lima were depicted as monkeys.

23 April 2014 – UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid v Bayern Munich

Fans of Real Madrid displayed a far-right banner.

Details of the incident were passed to UEFA for action.

23 April 2014 – Uruguayan Segunda División Profesional: Tacuarembó v Club Atlético Villa Teresa

Club Atlético Villa Teresa’s players Jorge Rodríguez and Joel Burgueño were subjected to racist abuse from fans of Tacuarembó.

27 April 2014 – Spanish La Liga BBVA: Villareal v FC Barcelona

A Villareal fan threw a banana towards the Barcelona player Dani Alves while he was preparing for a corner kick.

The player responded by picking up the banana and taking a bite.

Details of the incident were passed to the Royal Spanish Football Federation for action.

Perpetrator was subsequently arrested and handed a life-long ban on entering Villareal stadium.

27 April 2014 – English Premier League: Liverpool FC v Chelsea FC

Chelsea’s striker Demba Ba was allegedly subjected to racist abuse by Liverpool fans.

The police is investigating the claims.
