Incidents list reported to Fare during September 2016

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during September 2016. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eye-witness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently in place at UEFA Champions and Europa League and FIFA World Cup 2018 Russia preliminary competition to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

01 September 2016 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Argentina v Uruguay

Groups of Argentinian fans chanted a homophobic chant directed at Uruguayans.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

01 September 2016 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Paraguay v Chile

A group of Chile fans performed sexist slurs after the announcement of each Paraguayan player and homophobic chants.

Groups of Paraguay fans sang sexist remarks.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

Japanese fans displayed several nationalistic flags.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

01 September 2016 – Spanish ultras

Two football fans with links to the ultra group of RCD Español Brigadas Blanquiazules allegedly assaulted a pregnant woman wearing a niqab in Barcelona.

The two men were detained.

02 September 2016 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: El Salvador v Mexico

Groups of El Salvador fans chanted homophobic words during Mexico National anthem.

A small group of Mexico fans chanted homophobic remarks.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

02 September 2016 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Honduras v Canada

A group of Honduras fans chanted homophobic slurs.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

04 September 2016 – Catalan Second Division: UE Valls v Cambrils Unió

Female referee Marta Galego was subjected to sexist abuse by a fan in the stands.

The referee halted the match and ordered the fan to be removed from the stadium.

5 September 2016 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Albania v FYR Macedonia

Albanian fans displayed several nationalistic banners.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

5 September 2016 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Israel v Italy

Three Italian fans performed a Nazi salute.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

06 September 2016 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Brazil v Colombia

A group of Brazilian fans chanted homophobic slurs after the Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina took a goal kick.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

06 September 2016 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Chile v Bolivia

A group of Chilean fans sang a sexist and misogynist song directed at the Bolivian goalkeeper Carlos Lampe. Chilean fans also chanted homophobic remarks and chants.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

06 September 2016 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Mexico v Honduras

Groups of Mexico fans chanted homophobic slurs every time the Honduras goalkeeper took a goal kick.

Fans of Honduras chanted homophobic slurs directed at Mexicans.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

06 September 2016 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Peru v Ecuador

Peruvian fan group La Blaquirroja chanted homophobic slurs directed at Ecuadorians. Fans of Peru also made monkey noises directed at the Ecuadorian player Michael Arroyo.

10 September 2016 – Spanish Segunda Andaluza Cádiz Juvenil: CD La Salle v Atlético Zabal

A CD La Salle supporter made homophobic remarks directed at the match referee.

11 September 2016 – Austria: Fans of Linzer-Athletik-Sport-Klub

Around 20 fans of Linzer-Athletik-Sport-Klub involved in violence with refugees.

14 September 2016 – UEFA Champions League: Legia Warsaw v Borussia Dortmund

Legia Warsaw fans performed anti-Semitic chants on several occasions during the match.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

15 September 2016 – Paolo Di Canio

Former Lazio player Paolo Di Canio was suspended from his role as a TV analyst for Sky Italia after displaying a tattoo linked to the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.

16 September 2016 – Dutch Eerste Divisie: FC Volendam v Jong FC Utrecht

A FC Volendam of fan was filmed making racist gestures directed at Jong FC Utrecht players.

17 September 2016 – The Football Association

The Football Association was accused of discrimination for spending 83p on the women’s game out of every £100 that football receives in TV deals.

17 September 2016 – La Liga: Leganes v Barcelona

Leganes fans directed discriminatory chants at Barcelona head coach Luis Enrique for having a black father.

20 September 2016 – La Liga: Sevilla FC v Real Betis

Betis fans chanted misogynist chants towards Sevilla.

25 September 2016 – La Liga: Cadiz CF v Real Oviedo

A group of Cadiz CF supporters chanted homophobic chants directed at the opposing team and fans.

25 September 2016 - Catarinense 2: Atlético Tubarão v Hercílio Luz

Player Jefferson da Silva Nascimento, from Hercílio Luz FC, was racially abused by a fan from Atlético Tubarão calling him a monkey.

29 September 2016 – Finnish Veikkausliiga: Seinajoen Jalkapallokerho

Seinajoen Jalkapallokerho decision to sack four African players viewed as a racially driven decision.

29 September 2016 – UEFA Europa League: Olympiacos v APOEL

APOEL fans displayed a flag of a far-right political party closely affiliated with neo-Nazis

29 September 2016 – UEFA Europa League: Sparta Praha v Internazionale

Monkey noises directed to an Inter player were heard coming from Sparta Praha fans.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

Sanctions

Dudley Magistrates Court: Paul Gascoigne

Dudley Magistrates Court fined former England footballer Paul Gascoigne £1,000 and ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation for making a racist comment to a black security guard at his 'An Evening With Gazza show' in 2015.

UEFA: Legia Warsaw

UEFA have sanctioned Legia Warsaw with a one match stadium ban over the racist chanting over their fans during a UEFA Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund.

UEFA: FC Rostov

UEFA ordered the partial closure of the “East Stand” of the FC Rostov Stadium during the next UEFA competition match in which FC Rostov plays as the host club over racism during the Champions League match against AFC Ajax on 24 August.
