The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during March 2017. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently at place at UEFA club competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

01 March 2017 – Italian Coppa Italia: Lazio v Roma

German Roma defender of Ivorian descent Anthony Rüdiger was subjected to racist abuse perpetrated by Lazio fans.

A stadium announcement was made to half the abuse.

The Italian Football Association declined to issue a fine and said "impossible to ascertain the number or percentage of the fans who joined in the chant".

02 March 2017 – United States Major League Soccer: Atlanta United v New York Red Bulls

A group of Atlanta United fans chanted homophobic remarks at opposition players.

06 March 2017 – Kazan: Football hooligans

A 24-year-old Chadian student has been killed in a racist attack in Kazan, Russia, by a group of football hooligans.

06 March 2017 – Croatian 1 HNL: NK Osijek v HNK Hajduk

Ultra fans of HNK Hajduk, Torcida, chanted homophobic remarks at the opponents. Ultra fans of NK Osijek, Cohort, chanted homophobic remarks at the opponents.

07 March 2017 – Matías Defederico

Argentinian player Matías Defederico received phone messages threatening his wife and daughters of rape.

10 March 2017 – Mexican Liga MX: Bravos de Juárez v Alebrijes de Oaxaca

Brazilian player Gilberto Barbosa was racially abused by Bravos de Juárez fans.

12 March 2017 – Spanish La Liga: Real Club Deportivo La Coruña v FC Barcelona

A group of 700 Riazor Blues fans chanted homophobic and xenophobic remarks directed at FC Barcelona player Denis Suárez at minute 20 and 41.

A report was sent from La Liga to the Spanish Football Association for action.

14 March 2017 – Boa Esporte: Bruno Fernandeds de Souza

Brazilian club Boa Esporte faced backlash after giving two-year contract to Bruno Fernandes de Souza, who was convicted of murdering his girlfriend and having her body fed to his dogs, as their new goalkeeper.

20 March 2017 – Costa del Este FC players

Players of the Panamanian club Costa del Este FC were ban from entering on a pizzeria for being black.

23 March 2017 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Argentina v Chile

Groups of Argentinian fans sang homophobic, sexist and misogynist remarks directed at the opponents.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

A report of the match referee included the sexist and misogynist remarks made by Lionel Messi to the referee.

23 March 2017 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Mexico v Costa Rica

Groups of Mexico fans chanted homophobic abuse directed at the opposing goalkeeper and to the referee. A group of Costa Rica fans chanted homophobic abuse directed at the opponents.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

25 March 2017 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Bulgaria v The Netherlands

Small group of Bulgaria fans made monkey noises directed at Dutch player Quincy Promes when taking a corner kick.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

26 March 2017 – Spanish Juveniles Primera Regional: CD Onda B v CD Segorbe

A group of CD Onda B fans chanted racist slur directed at Segorbe player Ahmed Azzia.

The incident was included on the referee’s match report.

26 March 2017 – Spanish Segunda Regional Baleares: Vilafranca v Serralta

A group of Vilafranca fans shouted homophobic, misogynist and racist directed at Serralta players.

27 March 2017 – Colombia: UN Women on Pablo Amero

UN Women Colombia has called on the national Football Association to ensure ‘zero tolerance’ on gender-based violence after the player Pablo Amero, who has been charged with domestic violence, was called to join the national team.

28 March 2017 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Trinidad and Tobago v Mexico

A group of Mexico fans chanted homophobic abused directed at the opposing team goalkeeper.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

28 March 2017 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Brazil v Paraguay

Groups of Brazil fans chanted homophobic abuse at the opposing goalkeeper.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

28 March 2017 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Japan v Thailand

Japanese fans displayed several nationalistic/ discriminatory rising sun flags

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

31 March 2017 – Czech Second League: SK Sigma Olomouc v FK Dukla Praha

FK Dukla Praha Congolese player Budge Manzia was subjected to racist abuse by a group SK Sigma Olomouc fans.

Twitter: Corinthians

A post of Corinthians about the match against rival São Paulo was criticized for an underlying homophobic message.

Twitter: Manchester United

Manchester United received homophobic abuse on social media after announcing a partnership with the LGBT charity Stonewall.

Twitter: Rafael Vaz

Flamengo player Rafael Vaz was subjected to racist abuse on Twitter after the Copa Libertadores match Universidad Católica.

Twitter: Zbigniew Boniek

Polish Football Association chairman Zbigniew Boniek caused controversy after using a derogatory term for women made to a female football administrator.

Sanctions

Portuguese Football Association: Rio Ave

The Portuguese Football Association handed a €536 fine to Rio Ave over their fans’ racist abuse of former Benfica player Renato Sanches in 2016.

Mexican Football Association: Alebrijes de Oaxaca fans

The Mexican Football Association handed a life ban to two fans of Alebrijes de Oaxaca after they racially abused Bravos de Juárez Brazilian player Gilberto Barbosa.

FIFA: Lionel Messi

FIFA have handed a four match ban for a sexist and misogynist insult directed at the referee.
