The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during March 2016. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eye-witness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently in place at UEFA Champions and Europa League and FIFA World Cup 2018 Russia preliminary competition to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

01 March 2016 – Croatian Prva Liga: HNK Hajduk v NK Osijek

A group of HNK Hajduk ultras Torcida chanted ant-Roma and homophobic chants.

05 March 2016 – Dutch League C: VVOG v Harkemase Boys

A group of Harkemase Boys made monkey chants targeted at a VVOG black player.

The player and VVOG coach reported the incident to the referee, who gave the latter a red card.

05 March 2016 – English Premier League: Arsenal fans

Images emerged of a group of Arsenal fans chanting anti-Semitic abuse on the underground moments before the Premier League encounter against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

05 March 2016 – Spanish Junior Third League: Armilla CF v Huétor Tájar

Armilla CF player was subjected to racist abuse by a fan attending the match.

05 March 2016 – Spanish La Liga: RC Deportivo de la Coruña v Málaga CF

A group of 800 fans of RC Deportivo ultras Riazor Blues chanted a discriminatory slogan directed at Málaga CF.

05 March 2016 – Ukrainian Premier League: Chornomorets Odesa v Karpaty

Karpaty Nigerian striker Gabriel Okechukwu was subjected to racist chants by a group of Karpaty fans.

06 March 2016 – Croatian Prva Liga: NK Rijeka v NK Osijek

A group of fans of NK Rijeka ultras Armada chanted xenophobic, anti-Roma and homophobic songs.

Fans belonging of Osijek ultras group Kohorta chanted homophobic songs.

06 March 2016 – Croatian Prva Liga: HNK Hajduk v GNK Dinamo

Fans of HNK Hajduk ultra group Torcida chanted xenophobic and nationalist songs.

Fans of GNK Dinamo ultra group BBB chanted homophobic and anti-Roma songs.

08 March 2016 – Peru: Silvio Valencia

Peruvian sports journalist Silvio Valencia made sexist remarks against the female referee Yelier Flores.

09 March 2016 - Australian inter-school football: Reddam House v Moriah College

Ten students of Reddam House chanted anti-Semitic abuse at eight players from Moriag College.

10 March 2016 – UEFA Europa League: Sparta Prague v Lazio

A group of Lazio fans sang racist chants each time Sparta Prague player Costa Nhamoinesu touched the ball.

The match was halted for a minute and the referee called for a stadium announcement to stop the chants.

11 March 2016 – Ukrainian Premier League: Karpaty v Dynamo Kyiv

Karpaty Nigerian striker Gabriel Okechukwu was subjected to racist chants by a group of Karpaty fans.

12 March 2016 – Polish Ekstraklasa: Cracovia Kraków v Legia Warszawa

A group of Legia fans made monkeys chants and yelled racist remarks to Cracovia Senegalese player Boubacara Dialiba when he left the pitch towards the restroom.

16 March 2016 – Brazilian Paulista Championship: Flamengo SP v Rio Preto

Flamengo player Tom allegedly racially abuse Rio Preto Felipe Manoel.

16 March 2016 – Italian Youth League: Settimo Torinese v Volpiano

A number of Volpiano players made homophobic remarks to Settimo Torinese players.

16 March 2016 – Madrid: PSV Eindhoven fans

A group of PSV Eindhoven fans were filmed urling coins onto the floor in front of several Roma women, and then cheering when the women picked up the money.

17 March 2016 – Barcelona: Arsenal fans

A group of Arsenal fans were filmed mocking a disabled migrant beggar on the streets of Barcelona.

17 March 2016 – CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores: Corinthians v Cerro Porteño

A Cerro Porteño fan made monkey gestures to Corinthians fans.

17 March 2016 – CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores: Nacional v Palmeiras

A Nacional fan made monkey gestures directed at Palmeiras striker Gabriel Jesus.

The player reported the incident to the referee but the referee did not stop the match.

Nacional were fined $10,000 by CONMEBOL.

17 March 2016 – Rome: Sparta Praha

A group of Sparta Praha fans were filmed urinating on a begging Roma woman.

17 March 2016 – Venezuelan Primera Divisón: Deportivo La Guaira v Ureña SC

Ureña SC assistant coach was allegedly subjected to racist remarks perpetrated by an assistant referee.

19 March 2016 – Scottish League One: Cowdenbeath v Dunfermline Athletic

A group of Cowdenbeath fans sang racist and anti-refugee chants directed at Dunfermline Athletic French-Moroccan striker Faissal El Bakhtaoui.

19 March 2016 – Spanish La Liga: Granada CF v Rayo Vallecano de Madrid

A group of 500 fans of the Granada CF ultra group Sección Kolokón chanted homophobic remarks aimed at Rayo Vallecano player Piti.

20 March 2016 - Chilean Primera Divisón: Universidad de Chile v Colo-Colo

In a post-match radio interview Universidad de Chile coach Leonardo Valencia made sexist comments directed at the female sports reporter interviewing him.

20 March 2016 – Cyprus First Division: AEK Larnaca v Apoel

An Apoel fan displayed a racist anti-refugee banner.

20 March 2016 – Ukrainian Premier League: Karpaty v FK Dnipro

Karpaty Nigerian striker Gabriel Okechukwu was subjected to racist chants by a group of Karpaty fans.

23 March – FIFA Friendly: Croatia v Israel

A group of Croatian fans chanted anti-Semitic chants directed at the Israel National Team.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

24 March 2016 – Brazilian sports newspaper Lance!

The cover of the Brazilian sports newspaper Lance! featured a sexist metaphor objectifying women.

24 March 2016 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Chile v Argentina

A group of Chile fans chanted homophobic slurs against Argentinian people.

Argentina goalkeeper was subjected to homophobic chants by a group of Chile fans.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

24 March 2016 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Peru v Venezuela

A group of Peruvian fans sang homophobic chants directed at Venezuelan people.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

25 March 2016 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Canada v Mexico

A group of Mexico fans repeatedly chanted homophobic slurs.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

25 March 2016 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: El Salvador v Honduras

A group of El Salvador fans sang homophobic slurs directed at Honduras players.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

25 March 2016 – Republic of Ireland manager: Martin O’Neill

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill made a sexist comment suggesting that only “really attractive” wives and girlfriends would be welcomed at his team’s Euro 2016 base.

26 March 2016 – FIFA Friendly: Hungary v Croatia

A group of Croatia fans chanted fascist and homophobic chants

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

26 March 2016 – Andalusia Third Division Youth League: Peña Madridista Linense v El Mirador

Peña Madridista Linense equipment manager made homophobic remarks towards the match referee.

29 March 2016 – CAF Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier: Uganda v Burkina Faso

Photos emerged of Ugandan police crude searches on female supporters.

29 March 2016 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Honduras v El Salvador

A group of Honduras fans chanted homophobic slurs at El Salvador players during the warm-up.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

29 March 2016 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Mexico v Canada

Groups of Mexican fans chanted homophobic slurs at Canada goalkeeper each time he made a goal kick.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

29 March 2016 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Paraguay v Brazil

A Paraguay fan made a racist remark directed at a Brazilian player.

30 March 2016 – UEFA Women’s Champions League: FFC Frankfurt v FC Rosengård

Rosengård player Gaëlle Enganamouit was subjected to racist abuse by a group of Frankfurt fans.

31 March 2016 – English FA Cup: Chelsea fans

Chelsea fans allegedly abused an Orthodox Jewish rail passenger with anti-Semitic chants after the FA Cup match between Milton Keynes and Chelsea.

Former Galway United Football Club director Mike Buckley posted racist comments online saying he didn’t feel safe around Muslims after a series of terrorist attacks in Brussels.

Twitter: América de Natal Pedro Ivo

América de Natal (Brazil) player Pedro Ivo was the victim of racist comments on Twitter.

Sanction

English Police: Carlisle United fan

A 15-year-old Carlisle United fan arrested over allegations of racist behavior has been released without charge.

Two others arrested in connection with the alleged incident remain on bail.

The incident took place at the FA Cup tie between Carlisle United and Everton on 31 January.

Larnaca District Court: Apoel fan

Cypriot Larnaca District Court ordered a 21-year-old Apoel fan to 75 hours of community service for two years and a stadium ban after he displayed a racist and anti-refugee banner at the AEK Larnaca v Apoel match on 20 March 2016.

Peru: Silvio Valencia

Peruvian sports journalist Silvio Valencia was fired by the Radio Exitosa for the sexist remarks against the female referee Yelier Flores in March.

On 20 March the sports journalist was re-hired by the radio station.

Portuguese Football Federation: Leixões

The Portuguese Football Federation have sanctioned Second Division team Leixões with a stadium closure for two games for repeated racist incidents.

The club has appealed the sanction.

Reddam House: 10 students

The 10 Reddam House students involved in anti-Semitic chants at a friendly inter-school match in March have been told to attend the Jewish Board of Deputies' Respect, Understanding and Acceptance schools harmony programme.

Royal Andalusia Football Federation: Peña Madridista Linense equipment manager

Royal Andalusia Football Federation have ordered a nine match-ban to a Peña Madridista Linense equipment manager for making homophobic remarks towards a referee at a championship match on 26 march.

The Football Association: Martin Potton

Wellingborough Town manager Martin Potton has been ordered a five match ban and fined £75 after being found guilty of making sexist comments about the female referee Mary Harmer.

Wester Hailes police: alleged Hearts fan

Wester Hailes police has charged a 48-year-old man, alleged Hearts fan, for xenophobic behaviour directed at Klimarnock FC striker Josh Magennis at a match between Hearts and Klimarnock on 28 February.

The man has been banned from going half-a-mile of Hearts Tynecastle Stadium for two hours before and two hours after the end of matches.
