The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during June 2017. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently at place at UEFA club competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

06 June 2017 - FIFA under 20 World Cup 2017: Portugal v Uruguay

Uruguayan Federico Valverde made a discriminatory gesture during his goal celebration.

08 June 2017 - Springfield Soccer Club tournament

The Azzurri Cachorros were disqualified from the soccer tournament because the referee said one of their players looked ‘like a boy’ even after showing ID confirming she is a female. Several female players condemned the discrimination against the player.

08 June 2017 – FIFA World Cup Qualifier: Mexico v Honduras

A group of Mexico fans chanted homophobic chants (puto) on several occasions during the match.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

11 June – FIFA World Cup Qualifier: Mexico v USA

A group of Mexico fans chanted homophobic chants (puto) on several occasions during the match.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

11 June 2017 - FIFA World Cup Qualifier: Serbia v Wales

A group of Serbia fans displayed far-right banners during the match.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

13 June 2017 - FIFA World Cup Qualifier: Panama v Honduras

A group of Panama fans made homophobic and misogynist chants during the match.

13 June 2017 – FIFA World Cup Qualifier: Costa Rica v Trinidad & Tobago

A group of Costa Rica fans made a series of homophobic and misogynist chants during the match.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

17 June 2017 – Peruvian journalist: Phillip Butlers

Peruvian journalist Phillip Butlers made several racist comments about the Ecuadorian forward Felipe Caicedo even calling the player a gorilla live on television.

18 June 2017 – FIFA 2017 Confederations Cup: Portugal v Mexico

A group of Mexican fans chanted homophobic chants on several occasions during the match directed at Portuguese players.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

22 June 2017 – FIFA 2017 Confederations Cup: Cameroon v Australia

A Russian spectator, supporting Cameroon, was seen wearing blackface in the stadium. The fan removed the black face during the match after security intervened.

25 June 2017 – FIFA 2017 Confederations Cup: Chile v Australia

A group of Chile fans chanted homophobic chants during the match directed at Australian fans.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

29 June 2017 – UEFA Europa League: FK Crvena Zvezda v Floriana FC

A group of home fans unveiled discriminatory and homophobic banners as well as chanting a series of homophobic slurs during the match.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

29 June 2017 – UEFA Europa League: Rangers FC v FC Progres Niederkorn

A group of Rangers FC fans sang banned sectarian songs several times during the match.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

Sina Weibo: Chinese Super League: Jiangsu Suning v Beijing Guoan

A supporter of Jiangsu posted on Chinese social media platform Sina Weibo a xenophobic comment concerning Beijing Guoan’s Turkish player Burak Yilmaz.

Sanctions

Superior Court of Justice (Brazil): Rio Grande do Sul fan

The Brazilian Superior Court of Justice upheld a sanction of 5,000 Brazilian Reais handed by the Rio Grande do Sul Court of Justice to a fan for racially abusing another fan at a match in Caxias do Sul
