The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during July 2016. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eye-witness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently in place at UEFA Champions and Europa League and FIFA World Cup 2018 Russia preliminary competition to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

02 July 2016 – UEFA EURO 2016: Germany v Italy

Fare observers witnessed xenophobic chanting during the UEFA EURO 2016 quarterfinal against Italy.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

06 July 2016 – Italian right-wing football fan

A Nigerian migrant was beaten to death in a racist attack by a right-wing football fan in a central Italian town.

07 July 2016 – UEFA EURO 2016: Germany v France

Fare observers witnessed xenophobic chanting during the UEFA EURO 2016 semifinal directed to the referee.

07 July 2016 – UEFA Europa League: Beitar Jerusalem FC v FK Sloboda Tuzla

Fans from Beitar Jerusalem chanted an anti-Arab and xenophobic chant.

07 July 2016 – UEFA Europa League: MKS Cracovia Kraków v KF Shkëndija

A group of MKS Cracovia Kraków fans were chanting a discriminatory chant against Albanians.

14 July 2016 – UEFA Europa League: Beitar Jerusalem FC v AC Omonia

Fans from Beitar Jerusalem chanted an anti-Arab and xenophobic chant. Beitar fans also made monkey noises and sang a racist chant.

14 July 2016 – UEFA Europa League: FK Partizan v Zagłebie Lubin

Partizan supporters displayed a banner featuring a far-right symbol.

Levski Sofia supporters displayed a banner featuring a far-right symbol.

20 July 2016 – Pre-season club friendly: Padova v Lazio

Lazio Senegalese striker Keita Balde was subjected to racist chants by a group of Padova fans.

The mayor of Padova offered apologies to the player.

21 July 2016 – UEFA Europa League: PFC Levski Sofia v NK Maribor

Levski Sofia supporters displayed several far right and neo-Nazi banners and flags during the match.

21 July 2016 – UEFA Europa League: Zagłebie Lubin v FK Partizan

A group of Partizan fans were chanting a discriminatory, xenophobic chant directed against Albanians.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

21 July 2016 – UEFA Europa League: AC Omonia v Beitar Jerusalem FC

A group of Beitar Jerusalem fans chanted a racist chant including monkey noises.

21 July 2016 – UEFA Europa League: Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC v FC Kairat Almaty

A group of Maccabi Tel-Aviv supporters chanted anti-Arab Islamophobic chants.

21 July 2016 – Peruvian Torneo Clausura: Universitario de Deportes v Alianza Lima

A group of Universitario de Deportes fans racially abused Alianza Lima Julio Landauri.

A stadium announcement was made over the tannoy system to halt the abuse.

23 July 2016 – Pre-season club friendly: Burnley v Bradford City

A Burnley fan racially abused a Bradford City player.

Burley issues an apology to Bradford City.

26 July 2016 – UEFA Champions League: Sparta Praha v Steaua Bucharest

Sparta Praha fans chanted multiple discriminatory anti-Roma chants during the match.

28 July 2016 – UEFA Europa League: Austria Wien v Spartak Trnava

Discriminatory anti-Semitic chanting was performed by a group of Spartak Trnava fans.

UEFA EURO 2016

The estimated instances of discriminatory abuse during the EURO 2016, on Facebook and Twitter, amount to approximately 22,000.

England national team player Jamie Vardy was subjected to discriminatory online abuse during EURO 2016 in 9,881 estimated times.

Facebook: Danes’ Party

The far-right Danes’ Party posted a Facebook post insinuating the France's national team should be ruled out of the Euro 2016 tournament since many of its players are of African heritage.

Facebook: Martin ‘Murt’ O’Connor

Bray Wanderers General Manager Martin ‘Murt’ O’Connor posted homophobic and racist comments on Facebook.

Twitter: Beatrix von Stroch

The politician Beatrix von Stroch of Germany’s far-right AfD party made racist tweet targeting players of the national team with immigrant roots.

Twitter: Zbigniew Boniek

Polish Football Association President Zbigniew Boniek posted a xenophobic tweet after the Nice attacks.

Sanctions

Barcelona Court: Spanish men

A Barcelona Court ordered provisional release for three men that assaulted and attacked three female fans of the Spanish national team. The men were forbidden of being in places where Spanish fans gather, to get closer than 1000m from the victims and to appear periodically before the police.

Cambridge Court: Darren Cronin

Darren Cronin has been charged with two offences relating to an alleged racist incident targeting Barrow PC Tony Johnson.

Peruvian League: Universitario

The Disciplinary Commission of the Peruvian League handed a 2.350 dollars fine to Universitario Deportes for the racist behaviour of their fans.

Arsenal FC: Football fan

Arsenal have banned a fan indefinitely for discriminatory social media posts
