Incidents list reported to Fare during January 2018

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during January 2018. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently at place at UEFA club competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

03 January 2018 - FIFA Under 17 World Cup Final: England v Spain

Liverpool youth player Rhian Brewster reported that he and team mate Gibbs-White were racially abused several times throughout the match by Spanish players.

06 January 2018 - English FA Vase: Wisbech v Bromsgrove Sporting

Sporting goalkeeper Reece Francis faced a barrage of racial abuse from a group of home fans.

06 January 2018 - Italian Serie A: Caligari v Juventus

Juventus Blaise Matuidi was subjected to racist chants by a group of Caligari fans.

10 January 2018 - Spanish La Liga: Real Madrid v FC Barcelona

A section of Real Madrid fans directed discriminatory chants of xenophobic nature and based on disability towards Barcelona players Messi and Piqué with Messi.

12 January 2018 - Chelsea FC youth players

Three Chelsea FC former youth players have launched legal proceedings against the club after it emerged that Youth Coaches Graham Rix and Gwyn Williams subjected black players to extreme racial abuse.

13 January 2018 - English Evo-Stik League: Spalding United v Romulus

A Romulus player was racially abused by a Spalding fan.

15 January 2018 - English Premiership: West Brom v Brighton and Hove Albion

Brighton player Gaetan Bong accused Jay Rodriguez of racially abusing him during the match between the two clubs.

15 January 2018 - German Bundesliga: Hannover 96 v Mainz 05

Mainz players Leon Balogun and Anthony Ujah were racially abused by a group of Hannover 96 fans.

16 January 2018 - Spanish La Liga: Levante UD v Celta Vigo

Celta Vigo player Aspas allegedly racially abuse Levante’s Lerma (“negro de mierda”). An investigation was launched into the racist abuse and later dropped.

17 January 2018 - Boca Juniors: Carlos Tevez

Carlos Tevez made a homophobic comment about his son whilst being interviewed by TyC Sports.

18 January 2018 - Watford: Richard Collinge

Former head of Watford’s medical services is suing the club after claiming the reason he lost his job was because is based on discrimination.

19 January 2018 - Spanish Copa del Rey: RCD Espanyol v FC Barcelona

Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué was subjected to homophobic and racist chants in the 24th and 76th minutes of the match by a group of Espanyol fans referring to the skin colour of one of Piqué’s sons.

21 January 2018 - Italian Serie A: Atalanta v Napoli

Napoli player Kalidou Koulibaly was racially abused by a group of Atalanta fans.

22 January 2018 - English National League: Braintree Town v Hemel Town FC

Hemel player Scott Shulton was subjected to anti-semitic comments made to him by an opposing player.

The English FA has launched an investigation into the incident.

22 January 2018 - Spanish 1a Preferente Asturiana: Ribadedeva v Nalón

A group of Ribadedeva fans directed racial and sexist abuse at match official Tarekegne Asnake Wolde, who was referred to as “negro de mierda” and “puto negro” during the match. Lineswoman Sonia Güevea Rodríguez was subjected to sexist and misogynist slurs ("puta", "zorra").

The Asturian Federation has opened an investigation into the case.

22 January 2018 - Spanish referee María Luisa Aria

Spanish referee María Luisa in association with the organisation ‘Búscome’ called on an investigation into the Committee for Referees in Ceuta for terminating her employment as a referee for bringing her son to matches.

22 January 2018 - Sports Journalist Zinho

Live on television Zinho used the homophobic term ‘Bambi’ to describe Brazilian player Emerson Sheik.

25 January 2018 - Portuguese Taça da Liga: Sporting Lisbon v FC Porto

Sporting player Fabio Coentrão was caught on camera in the 75th minute of the match directing a racist comment towards Porto’s Marega.

25 January 2018 - Spanish Copa del Rey: FC Barcelona v RCD Espanyol

A group of Barcelona fans located in the lower north stand directed sexist and misogynist chants at Espanyol goalkeeper Pau López calling him a “puta de cabaret”.  Some members of the Barcelona facist ultra group Fora feixistes del Camp Nou also performed Nazi salutes.

25 January 2018 - United States Idaho Juniors Futbol Club

Jeromy Tarkon, head coach of Idaho Juniors Futbol Club, received a threatening letter warning him for coaching foreign players. The letter comes as his team for years have been subjected to racist slurs on the pitch.

26 January 2018 - Spanish Copa del Rey: FC Barcelona v RCD Espanyol

A group of Barcelona fans made xenophobic and sexist slurs towards RCD Espanyol.

RCD Espanyol sent a report to the state's Anti-violence Commission.

30 January 2018 - Spanish La Liga: Sporting Gijón v Gimnástic de Tarragona

During the match Sporting’s ultra group Ultra Boys were filmed singing: “We don’t want black players”.

7 January 2018 - Everton: Mason Holgate 

A torrent of racist tweets were sent to Everton’s Mason Holgate after his on pitch bust up with Liverpool’s Firmino.

The Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

10 January 2018 - Everton Mason Holgate

The English Football Association are investigating Everton player Mason Holgate after it emerged he had posted several homophobic tweets between 2012 and 2013.

15 January 2018 - FC Spartak Moscow

Russian club FC Spartak Moscow posted a racist tweet from their training camp referring to three of their black players as “chocolates”.

Sanctions

BBC: Trevor Sinclair

Former England International Trevor was fired as a BBC pundit for racially abusing a police officer while he was being arrested for drink driving. Sinclair was also given 150 hours community service and 20 month drink-driving ban.

Italian Football Association: Atalanta

Atalanta was handed a one-match behind ban over their fans' racist abuse targeting Napoli player Koulibaly on 21 January.

Italian Football Association: SS Lazio

SS Lazio have been fined 50,000 euros after 13 fans left anti-semitic stickers around the Stadio Olimpico before they played Caligari on the 2 October 2017.

Italian Football Association: Hellas Verona 

The Italian Football Association have handed a suspended partial stadium closure of Hellas Verona's south stand for a period of 12 months and fined the club €20,000 for their fans racism's against Juventus on a Serie A match on 30 December 2017.

Newcastle United U23: Peter Beardsley

Newcastle under-23s coach Peter Beardsley decided to take a prolonged period of leave after multiple complaints of racism and bullying emerged against him since he accepted the role in 2009.

Russian Football Union Ethics Committee: FC Spartak Moscow

Russian Football Union Ethics Committee have issued a warning to the player Georgy Dzhikia and fined the head of Spartak press Trahtenberg 20 000 RUB for the tweet referring to their black players as "chocolates".

UEFA: FK Crvena Zvezda

FK Crvena Zvezda must play their next UEFA competition home match behind closed doors and pay a fine of €50,000 due to the discriminatory behaviour of its supporters during the away match against FC BATE Borisov played on the 23rd November 2017.

West Ham United: Tony Henry

Director of Player Recruitment Tony Henry has been suspended after making a racist comment about the club not signing any African players because "they cause mayhem".
