Incidents list reported to Fare during February 2017

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during February 2017. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently at place at UEFA club competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

04 February 2017 – Australian A-League: Melbourne City v Melbourne Victory

Melbourne City goalkeepers Dean Bouzanis racially abused Melbourne Victory striker Besart Berisha.

05 February 2017 – Dutch Eredivisie: FC Twente v Feyenoord

A group of FC Twente fans unfurled a discriminatory banner reading ‘Kosovo is Serbia’.

05 February 2017 – Peruvian Primera División: Universitario de Deportes v Sport Huancayo

At minute 31 of the match Sport Huancayo player Julio Landauri was subjected to racist chants from Universitario fans. The player reported the incident to the referee and a stadium announcement was made to halt the abuse.

06 February 2017 – Just4Keepers South East

Recruiters Just4Keepers South East refused the FA qualified coach Vikki Childs a job for being a woman.

06 February 2017 – Brazilian Série A: Vasco da Gama

Vasco da Gama President Eurico Miranda made sexist and homophobic remarks in a TV show.

08 February 2017 – FIFA International Friendly: Mexico v Iceland

Large numbers of Mexico fans chanted homophobic abuse directed at the opposing goalkeeper.

09 February 2017 – Brazilian Campeonato Goiano: Atlético GO v CRAC

Atlético player Jorginho allegedly racially abused CRAC player Guaraci. Guaraci was sent out for hitting Jorginho on the back of the head and for making an ‘obscene’ gesture to the referee.

11 February 2017 – English Football League One: Millwall v Southend United

A probe has been launched after Southend United Jermaine McGlashan was racially abused during the warm-up by a fan of Millwall.

The incident has been reported to Millwall and the police.

12 February 2017 – Iranian Pro League: Esteghlal v Persepolis

Eight Iranian girls who disguised as boys to attend the match - despite an official ban – were prevented from entering the stadium.

12 February 2017 – Spanish Segunda Catalana Femina: Lloretenc v Atletic Masnou

Players of Atletic Masnou were subjected to violent and sexist abuse at the end of the match.

15 February 2017 – CONMEBOL Libertadores Cup: Deportivo Capiatá v Atlético Paranaense

Atlético Paranaense player Carlos Alberto was racially abused by a group of Deportivo Capiatá fans.

16 February 2017 – UEFA Europa League: PAOK v Schalke 04

Ahead of the UEFA Europa League match PAOK v Schalke 04, fans of the German club reported a circular of PAOK, which prohibited Macedonian citizens to enter the stadium.

16 February 2017 – UEFA Europa League: Olympiacos v Osmanlispor

Fans of Olympiacos displayed a flag of Confederate States of America from 1863. A group of Olympiacos fans also chanted discriminatory and xenophobic chants against Turkish players based on nationality and ethnic origin.

18 February 2017 – Australian A-League: Sydney Wanderers v Sydney FC

A group of Sydney Wanderers fans known as Red and Black Block (BBB) unfurled a homophobic banner, which depicted Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold performing fellatio.

18 February 2017 – Serbian SuperLiga: FK Crvena Zvezda v FK Novi Pazar

A group of FK Crvena Zvezda fans displayed a nationalist banner against FK Novi Pazar.

19 February 2017 – Dutch Eredivisie: Vitesse v AFC Ajax

A group of Vitesse fans racially abused Ajax Cameroonian goalkeeper André Onana. The chants were stopped and not repeated after the intervention of stewards.

19 February 2017 – Serbian SuperLiga: FK Rad v FC Partizan Belgrade

FC Partizan Brazilian player Everton Luiz was racially abused by a group of FK Rad fans. The match was briefly stopped while stewards removed a banner allegedly insulting the player and while warnings were issued over the PA system to stop the abuse. The banner allegedly featured a Celtic cross, Confederate flag and SS Totenkopf.

19 February 2017 – Spanish Galician Primera Autonómica G5 Senior: Marcón Atlético v San Martín de Vilaxoán

San Martín de Vilaxoán player Carlos Arturo Sánchez Roja was racially abused by Marcón Atlético fans.

22 February 2017 – CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores: Deportivo Capiatá v Atlético Paranaense

Atlético players Carlos Alberto and Maycon Vinicius Ferreira da Cruz (known as Nikão) were racially abused by a group of Deportivo Capiatá fans.

24 February 2017 – Bulgarian First Professional Football League: Botev Plovdiv v Dunav Rouse

Fans of Botev Plovdiv racially abused Dunav Rouse player Bisrent Karageren after each of the two goals he scored.

25 February 2017 – Spanish La Liga: Real Betis v Sevilla FC

Before the match kick-off Betis fans across the stadium chanted sexist slurs against Sevilla. The incident happened twice and took about 10 seconds. At minute 56 of the match, around 300 fans of Betis repeated the sexist chant.

A La Liga report was sent to the Spanish FA for action.

25 February 2017 – Ukrainian Premier League: Dynamo Kyiv v FC Zorya

A group of Dynamo Kyiv fans racially abused FC Zorya Nigerian player Dennis Bonaventure.

Facebook: Jelena Polic

Following the racial abuse of Everton Luiz by FK Rad fans, the club’s Vice-President Jelena Polic took to social media to racially abuse de Brazilian player.

Twitter: BBC

On Valentine’s Day (14 February) made a homophobic post about a kiss between Gary Neville and Paul Scholes.

Twitter: Flamengo

A fan of Flamengo made a racist comment on a club post, addressing other fans.

Sanction

Canterbury Crown Prosecutor: Kennington FC

A Canterbury Crown Prosecutor sentenced Kennington FC player Luke Burdon to two years in a young offenders institute after calling racist slurs to a rival before elbowing him in the face and breaking his jaw during a Kent County League match in 2016.

Dutch Public Prosecutor: Ajax fan

The Ajax fan who hanged the black doll representing the Feyenoord goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer in February 2016 has been fined by a public prosecutor.

Football Federation Australia: Dean Bouzanis

Football Federation Australia have ordered Dean Bouzanis to undergo an education after racially abusing Melbourne Victory striker Besart Berisha. The player was must also serve a suspension of five matches.

Galicia Football Federation: Marcón Atlético

The Galician Football Federation imposed a €301 fine to Marcón Atlético over their fan’s racist abuse of San Martín de Vilaxoán player Arturo Sánchez Roja.

Italian Judge: Lazio fans

Two Lazio fans have been acquitted by a judge despite being caught on camera singing anti-Semitic chants at rival Roma supporters almost four years ago.

Ligue 1: Bastia

French League 1 disciplinary committee have ordered Bastia a partial stadium closure for three matches after some supporters racially abused Nice striker Mario Balotelli on 20 January 2017
