The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during August 2017. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently at place at UEFA club competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

01 August 2017 – Uruguayan La Copa Nacional de Clubes: Central de San José v Wanderers de Artigas

Central San José player Marcelo Moreira reported he was racially abused on the pitch by Wanderers Fredy López, Fabricio dos Santos and Cristian Fagúnde.

03 August 2017 – Friendly: MKS Ciechanow v Hapoel Petah Tikva

A group of masked football fans allegedly belonging to Legia Warsaw ran onto the field and attacked the Hapoel Petah Tikva squad as a display of anti-Semitism.

05 August 2017 – English League One: Charlton Athletic v Bristol Rovers

A Bristol Rovers supporter directed racist comments towards an opposing fan.

11 August 2017 – Italian Youth Match: Bruinese v Torino Calcio Femminile

Torino Calcio Femminile players were subjected to homophobic abuse from male players of Bruinese.

14 August 2017 – Southeast Asian Games: Malaysia v Brunei

A group of Malaysian fans directed racist slurs towards the Brunei squad and fans.

16 August 2017 – Brazilian Série A: Botafogo v Flamengo

A Botafogo supporter directed racist insults towards Flamengo player Vinicíus Junior’s uncles who were in the crowd for the match.

16 August 2017 – Southeast Asian Games: Malaysia v Singapore

Malaysia football fans chanted religious and racial slurs against Singapore people.

17 August 2017 – English Non League Premier: Kettering Town v Redditch United

A Redditch United player told the referee that he was the victim of racism after a Kettering town fan directed a racist slur towards him.

17 August 2017 – UEFA Europa League: Dinamo Zagreb v KF Skënderbeu

Several hundred Dinamo Zagreb fans sang anti-Roma chants during the match.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

18 August 2017 – UEFA Europa League: FC Viitorul Constanta v RB Salzburg

RB Salzburg player Paulo Miranda was subjected to monkey chants and banana eating gestures from a group of home supporters during the match.

19 August 2017 – Czech First Division: Bohemians v SK Slavia Praha

A group of Slavia Praha fans displayed homophobic flags during the match.

20 August 2017 – Ukrainian Premier League: FC Karpaty Lviv v FC Olexandria

A section of supporters of Karpaty Lviv was heard chanting “Sieg Heil”, “Rudolf Hess”, “Hitler Youth” and “SS”. These Nazi chants were carried out three days after Rudolf Hess’s birthday. Hess was a prominent politician in Nazi Germany.

20 August 2017 – Mexican Liga MX: León v Monterrey

Monterrey forward Dorlan Pabón was racially abused by a section of León fans calling him monkey (“mono”).

20 August 2017 – Portuguese Primeira Liga: Sporting Braga v Desportivo das Aves

A group of Braga performed racist actions during the match.

21 August 2017 – English Premier League: Leicester City v Brighton & Hove Albion

Two home fans directed homophobic insults towards away fans during the match.

21 August 2017 – England player: Eniola Aluko

England player Eniola Aluko accused England manager Mark Sampson of racism over comments about her family.

22 August 2017 – English League Two: Stevenage v Grimsby Town

Stevenage was accused of sexism after several away supporters were asked to show the stewards their bras in a security check.

22 August 2017 – UEFA Champions League: HNK Rijeka v Olympiacos

Several hundred home fans directed xenophobic chants towards Olympiacos.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

24 August 2017 – UEFA Europa League: FK Crvena Zvezda v Krasnodar

A group of home fans displayed far-right banners including a flag with a SS Totenkopf skull and a portrait of the Serbian leader of the far-right Chetnik movement.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

31 August 2017 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Brazil v Ecuador

A group of Brazil fans chanted homophobic slurs during the match.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

31 August 2017 – FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier: Uruguay v Argentina

Groups of supporters from both Uruguay and Argentina sections made several homophobic and misogynist chants during the match.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

Twitter: Chelsea Supporter Lee Munns

Chelsea supporter Lee Munns posted an anti-Semitic tweet after Chelsea beat Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League match played on the 20th August 2017.

Twitter: International Champions Cup: Chelsea v Inter Milan

The Sikh referee Sukhbir Singh who was in charge of the International Champions Cup tie between Chelsea and Inter Milan was racially abused online after the match.

Snapchat: Tekle Ghebrelu

An unnamed Greenlandic footballer racially abused the Eritrean coach Tekle Ghebrelu via snapchat before the coach was sacked.

Twitter: Romai Urgarte

Journalist Romai Urgarte made a sexist gesture insinuating a sexual act directed his new co-worker Grace Lazcano when she was talking.

Facebook: Van den Hurk

De Graafschap striker Anthony van den Hurk received a racist Facebook message from fan Kris de Rijck.

Facebook: Bahia fan

Photos of Bahia fan Edna Matos with her daughter was used by a group of five Grêmio female fans to racially abuse her. Grêmio made a colleague comparing their picture and Edna's and reading “And they think we are all the same”. Edna Matos reported the incident to Facebook.

Sanctions

FIFA: Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay

FIFA sanctioned several national football associations for homophobic and sexist incidents by spectators during the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Argentina was fined CHF 30,000, Uruguay CHF 25,000 and Brazil CHF 10,000.

Botafogo: fan

Botafogo have issues a lifetime ban to the fan the racially abused the uncles of their player Vinícius Junior.

Portuguese Football Association: Sporting Braga

Sporting Braga must play their next match against Paços de Ferreira behind closed doors and pay a €22,950 fine due to the racist behaviour of their fans during a match against Deportivo das Aves played on 20 August.

Superior Court of Football Justice (Brazil): Paysandu

The Brazilian Superior Court of Football Justice Paysandu’s fine from 7,500 Brazilian Reais to 5,000 Brazilian Reais for their fans’ homophobic behaviour.

UEFA: FK Partizan

FK Partizan received a €130,000 fine and will play their next two UEFA competition home matches behind closed doors due to a number of incidents of discrimination taking place over two home matches against FK Budućnost played on the 11th July and 23 July against Olympiacos.

UEFA: HNK Hajduk Split

HNK Hajduk Split have been fined €30,000 and must place their next UEFA competition match behind closed doors due to the racist behaviour of home fans during the match against PFC Levski Sofia played on the 13 July.
