Incidents list reported to Fare during August 2016

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during August 2016. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eye-witness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently in place at UEFA Champions and Europa League and FIFA World Cup 2018 Russia preliminary competition to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

03 August 2016 – Rio 2016 Olympics: Australia v Canada

Australian goalkeeper Lydia Williams was subjected to homophobic chants every time she took a goal kick. The chants were perpetrated by Brazilian fans.

03 August 2016 – Rio 2016 Olympics: United States v New Zealand

United States football team subjected to homophobic chants made by Brazilian fans.

03 August 2016 – UEFA Champions League: Steaua v Sparta Praha

Steaua fans displayed a banner featuring a Celtic cross.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

04 August 2016 – UEFA Europa League: Beitar Jerusalem FC v Jelgava

Beitar Jerusalem supporters performed racist and anti-Arab discriminatory chants.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

10 August 2016 – Rio 2016 Olympics: Argentina v Honduras

Honduras player Anthony Lozano was allegedly subjected to racist abuse by the Argentinian player Santiago Ascacibar.

13 August 2016 – Croatian Prva Liga: HNK Rijeka v NK Lokomotiva

HNK Rijeka ultra group Armada chanted homophobic chants.

14 August 2016 – Croatian Prva Liga: NK Osijek v HNK Hajduk Split

HNK Hajduk Split ultra fans Torcida started homophobic chants and NK Osijek ultras responded with homophobic chants.

14 August 2016 – Brazilian Serie A: Atlético Paranaense v Palmeiras

Palmeiras player Tchê Tchê was subjected to racist abuse by a small group of Atlético fans.

16 August 2016 – Rio 2016 Olympics: Milton Neves

Brazilian football commentator Milton Neves made sexist comments after Brazil v Sweden women’s football match.

18 August 2016 – UEFA Europa League: Panathinaikos v Brøndby

South African Brøndby international Lebogang Phiri was subjected to racist abuse by the Panathinaikos FC Swedish player Marcus Berg.

19 August 2016 – Widzew Łódź FC fans

Widzew Łódź FC ultras hung an anti-Semitic banner on a railway brigde close to the stadium directed at ŁKS Łódź FC.

20 August 2016 – Mansfield Town FC

Mansfield Town FC promoted their sponsor by sending women onto the pitch in outfits with sexist content and context.

20 August 2016 – United States Major League Soccer: LA Galaxy v Orange County Blues FC

LA Galaxy Robbie Rogers was subjected to homophobic abuse by a Orange County Blues FC player.

US Major League Soccer launched an investigation into the incident.

21 August 2016 – Polish right-wing football fans

A 19-year-old former Polish footballer was stabbed to death by right-wing hooligans.

21 August 2016 – Spanish La Liga: Sporting Gijon v Athletic Bilbao

A group of Sporting Gijon fans directed racist chants at Bilbao player Inaki Williams.

The match referee interrupted the match and an announcement was made over the tannoy system to halt the abuse.

25 August 2016 – UEFA Europa League: AS St. Etienne v Beitar Jerusalem

A group of AS St. Etienne fans performed anti-Semitic gestures directed at Beitar Jerusalem fans.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

25 August 2016 – Serbian Super League Žene: ŽFK Vojvodina v Red Star

ŽFK Vojvodina board member Dragana Capelja slapped Red Star player Nevena Miladinovic.

A report has been sent to the Serbian women’s Super League for action.

25 August 2016 – Recopa Sudamericana: River Plate v Santa Fé

A group of Santa Fé fans displayed a banner featuring a Nazi symbol.

28 August 2016 – Canadian Soccer League: Toronto FC v Montreal Impact

A group of Toronto FC fans displayed a sexist banner directed at Montreal Impact.

Toronto FC have apologized to Montreal Impact.

28 August 2016 – Serbian SuperLiga: Novi Pazar v Red Star Belgrade

A group of Novi Pazar fans hurled abuse at Red Star Gabonese miedfielder Guelor Kanga.

28 August 2016 – UEFA Champions League: Viktoria Plzeň v Ludogorets Razgrad

A group of Viktoria Plzeň fans directed monkey chants at Ludogorets players. The match referee interrupted the match to halt the abuse.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

Manchester United football was barraged with homophobic comments after posting a celebration post of the city’s Pride weekend.

Sanction

São Paulo Court: Camisa 12

A São Paulo Court fined the Corinthians fan group Camisa 12 and their President €6,545 each for homophobic protest against the player Emerson Sheik in 2013.

UEFA: Levski Sofia

UEFA have fined Levski Sofia €57,000 for displaying illegal banners.

El Lleida: Eric Zarata Lindes

Spanish Segunda B El Lleida fired the player Eric Zárata Lindes for his racist, sexist, homophobic and anti-Catalonia comments made in 2011 on Facebook.

The Football Association: Andre Gray

Burnley striker Andre Gray has been charged by the Football Association for misconduct relating to homophobic, sexist and racist tweets from 2012.
