Incidents list reported to Fare during April 2017

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during April 2017. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently at place at UEFA club competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

03 April 2017 – Brazilian Campeonato Gaúcho: Internacional v Grêmio

A Grêmio fan racially abused a group of Internacional fans calling them monkeys. The incident was reported to a fans court and will be addressed on 24 May.

03 April 2017 – Spanish Segunda Juvenil Grupo IV: San Lorenzo Massamagrell v Histórics Valencia

Histórics Valencia Colombian player John Edward Albornoz was racially abused from home fans throughout the match.

The referee stopped the match to halt the abuse.

04 April 2017 – Italian Serie B: Virtus Entella v Ascoli

A Nazi flag was spotted at the balcony of a flat during the Serie B match between Virtus Entella v Ascoli.

05 April 2017 – Brazilian Paulista A3 Championship: Paulista v Comercial

Paulista captain Fabão was called a monkey by around a dozen of Comercial fans.

14 April 2017 – Italian amateur tournament: Torino Calcio Femminile v Bruinese

Torino Calcio Femminile players (aged 13-15) have been victim of homophobic slurs by the opposing team and fans.

Torino Chairman decided to abandon the tournament and the incident was reported to the Italian Football Association and the Police.

07 April 2017 – German Bundesliga: Hannover 96

Hannover 96 have alleged put a life-size picture of TV presenter Sylvie Meis in their changing room to motivate the team, which has been controversial for objectifying women.

11 April 2017 – Croatian 1 HNL: HNK Rijeka v GNK Dinamo

Around 1000 fans of HNK Rijeka ultra group Armada sang homophobic and anti-Roma chants.

Fans of GNK Dinamo ultra group BBB chants an anti-Roma chant directed at football administrator Mamic.

12 April 2017 – CONMEBOL Libertadores Cup: Palmeiras v Peñarol

Felipe Melo of Palmeiras was called ‘monkey’ by Peñarol player Gastón Rodriguez.

At a post match interview Melo replied to the incident with a sexist remark attacking the integrity of Rodriguez’s wife.

12 April 2017 – UEFA Champions League: Atlético Madrid v Leicester City

A group of Leicester fans humiliated Roma beggars in Madrid.

13 April 2017 – Brazilian Gaúcho Championship: Novo Hamburgo v São José RS

São José RS player Wágner was called ‘monkey’ by a Novo Hamburgo fan.

14 April 2017 – England: The Sun

Merseyside Police are investigating allegations that a The Sun article about Everton midfielder Ross Barkley constitutes a “racial hate crime”.

16 April 2017 – Japanese J-League: Cerezo Osaka v Gamba Osaka

A group of Gamba Osaka fans unfurled a banner of a Nazi Schutzstaffel (SS) symbol.

The club has met the fan group and banned them from entering the team’s games.

16 April 2017 – Mexican community match

Journalist Juana Macaria España was attacked and saw her camera and equipment stolen by a football fan in Valle de Santiago after covering a local match.

17 April 2017 – AFC Champions League: Nejmeh SC v Al Wehdat

A group of Nejmeh SC fans chanted discriminatory phrases.

21 April 2017 – Argentina: Carlos Bilardo

Former Argentina coach Carlos Bilardo made sexist remarks speaking about rape during a TV show saying “there are women who provoke”.

21 April 2017 – Ukrainian Premier League: Dynamo Kyiv v Shaktar Donetsk

A group of Dynamo Kyiv fans made a far-right stadium display reading ‘100%white’ and in which neo-Nazi symbols could be found.

22 April 2017 – Indian I-League: Aizawl FC v Mohun Bagan

A group of Mohun Bagan fans sang xenophobic phrases to Aizawl FC fans.

23 April 2017 – Brazilian Paulista Championship: Corinthians v São Paulo

A group of Corinthians fans made homophobic remarks towards Maicon.

23 April 2017 – Chinese newspaper Guangzhou Daily

An article written by Zhang Jie in the Chinese newspaper Guangzhou Daily undermined the competence of the female coach Chan Yuen-ting.

23 April 2017 – Moroccan Botola: Olympique Khouribga v Ittihad Tanger

Ittihad Tanger Senegalese defender Ousseynou Tioune was subjected to racist abuse and monkey noises during the match.

The match was interrupted. The player was persuaded back by his team-mates, but the referee gave him a yellow card for leaving the pitch.

24 April 2017 – AFC Champions League: Hong Kong Eastern v Guangzhou Evergrande

A group of Guangzhou Evergrande fans displayed a xenophobic banner reading “Annihilate British dogs, extinguish Hong Kong independence poison” directed at Hong Kong Eastern.

25 April 2017 – AFC Champions League: Suwon Bluewings v Kawasaki Frontale

A Kawasaki Frontale supporter displayed a banner with a discriminatory symbol relating to national origin and political opinion.

A Kawasaki Frontale supporter displayed a banner with a discriminatory symbol relating to national origin and political opinion.

26 April 2017 – Brazil: Bruno Fernandes de Souza

Brazil’s supreme court has ordered the re-arrest of a professional footballer convicted of murdering his girlfriend, then prematurely released and allowed to sign for a club.

26 April 2017 – CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores: Peñarol v Palmeiras

A group of Peñarol fans directed racista insults towards Palmeiras and their fans.

27 April 2017 – Spanish La Liga: Real Club Deportivo La Coruna v Real Madrid

Around 700 fans of Deportivo ultra groups Riazor Blues and Old Faces chanted sexist and misogynist chants directed at Real Madrid Lucas Vasquez at minute 2, 11, 44 and 82.

28 April 2017 – German Regionalliga Nordost: SV Babelsberg 03 v FC Energie Cottbus

A group of FC Energie Cottbus fans performed Nazi salutes and unfurled a banner of the far-right group ‘New Society’.

29 April 2017 – Scottish Premiership: Rangers v Celtic

A Rangers fan made monkey gestures directed at Celtic winger Scott Sinclair.

The man was arrested after a picture emerged of him allegedly making a monkey gesture.

A second Rangers fan was accused of singing sectarian songs.

30 April 2017 – Italian Serie A: Cagliari v Pescara

Pescara player Sulley Muntari was subjected to racist abuse from 10 Cagliari fans. The midfielder walked off the pitch in protest. He appealed to the referee to stop the game, but the referee ignored the claims and booked him for dissent.

A Serie A Disciplinary Committee banned Muntari following the sending off but did not sanction Cagliari because the perpetrators were fewer than 1% of the Cagliari supporters in the ground.

The Italian FA has announced the lift of the ban.

30 April 2017 – United States Major League Soccer: Atlanta United FC v. DC United.

Atlanta United fans displayed a flag of a far-right group ‘III%’.

Facebook: Arouna Dang Bissene

Huracán player Arouna Dang Bissene wrote a post on Facebook allegedly reporting being the victim of discrimination.

Sanctions

Disciplinary Committee of Sport in Jaén, Spain: CD Torredelcampo

Disciplinary Committee of Sport in Jaén ordered the stadium closure of CD Torredelcampo ground for three matches and a 450 euros fine over the sexist abuse of a lineswoman on 22 January.

FIFA: Argentina, Brazil and Mexico

FIFA has fined Argentina, Brazil and Mexico following incidents of homophobia at qualifying matches for the 2018 Russia World Cup.

Argentina have been fined CHF 20,000, Brazil CHF 35,000 and Mexico CHF 10,000 for various incidents involving discriminatory and unsporting conduct by fans, including homophobic chants.

FIFA: Costa Rica

Costa Rica received a warning from FIFA for improper conduct among spectators including homophobic chants.

Glasgow Sheriff Court: Rangers fans

In Court, Rangers fan Paul Kenny admitted the offence. He was granted bail with the condition that he cannot go to any regulated football games.

A second Rangers fan, Steven Morrison, from Pollok, admitted singing sectarian lyrics of a song at the match.

He too will be sentenced at a later date and was granted bail with the same conditions not to go to any regulated football matches.

Northampton Magistrates Court: Cambridge United fan

A Cambridge United fan has been banned from football matches for three years after making racially offensive gestures to a man at a Northampton Town game on 12 March.

The banning order prevents the man from attending any football matches in the UK, as well as England matches abroad, for three years.

Tarn-et-Garonne district: Castel-Moissac

French community club Castel-Moissac have been ordered to pay 75 euros for fielding girls at matches of the local age eight championship. The district demands that mixed teams are not allowed
