The European Gay and Lesbian Spots Foundation (EGLSF) will host the “United Against Homophobia in Sports” conference at the Utrecht University School of Government in Utrecht, Netherlands. It will be held in collaboration with Movisie, the Mulier Institute, and the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS).
The conference will open with speeches from the Dutch Minister for Health, Welfare and Sport, Mrs Edith Ingeborg Schippers, and the Deputy of Labour, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities of Albania, Ms. Filloreta Kodra as well as many others. Conference attendees will join together for workshops aimed at themes such as the safety of LGBT athletes, attitudes of supporters in stadiums, possibilities for “same-sex” couples to participate together in sporting disciplines, and the integration of transgender athletes in recreational and competitive sport.
The event aims to look at the overall level of homophobia and transphobia in sport and how the activities and projects of local organisations are having an impact on this, particularly amongst young people.
Organiser Lou Manders said, "It is more important today then ever to bring people together and face the issue of homophobic discrimination in sport head on. This conference puts researchers, policymakers and the sport movement at the same table. The challenge we face is big and we definitely need each other to work towards a safe environment for all LGBT athletes in Europe."
