Berlin to host conference on identity and discrimination in football and fan cultures
A two-day conference will bring together football fans, activists and an international panel of experts to explore how football interacts with society, politics, culture and economics and what role discrimination plays within this context.
Held under the theme ‘The Beautiful Game? Identity, Resentment, and Discrimination in Football and Fan Cultures’, the conference will take place in Berlin on 12 and 13 April.
A total of seven panels will address topics including fan cultures, football and identity and tackling discrimination. Scholars from across the world will present the findings of their research and provide insight on the different perspectives and contexts in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and the United States.
Key note speakers will include: Emma Poulton, who will present her paper on 'Collective Identity and Forms of Abuse and Discrimination in Football Fan Culture' and Andrei S. Markovits who will present findings on 'What Is It About Association Football – The Arrogantly Self-Appointed ‘Beautiful Game’ – That Renders Most (Though Not All) Of Its Fan Cultures So Ugly?'.
The event is organised by Zentrum für Antisemitismusforschung der Technischen Universität Berlin and supported by Fare.
Attendance is free. To register, send an email with your contact details to registration@asf.tu-berlin.de. See the full programme here.
