Bologna hosts the radical joy of the Giochi Antiracist Games this June
The Bonori sports centre in Bologna will become the vibrant heart of something different when between June 20th and 22nd the Giochi Antirazzisti takes place.
More than just a sporting event this festival is the new project from Carlo Balestri, the founder of the Mondali Antirazzisti that brought together tens of thousands of people over many years, and will harness the language of play, alongside music and culture, as a tool against discrimination, war, and exclusion, actively building bridges between people.
“The Giochi Antirazzisti is a reimagining of what sport can be”, says Balestri, “At its core, the aim of the Giochi is to reclaim sport as time filled with fun, socialization, and learning. We put the game itself at the centre, deliberately tweaking traditional rules to strip away rivalry and encourage collaboration and understanding. This is sport redefined as a shared, inclusive experience.”
Imagine football (7-a-side), volleyball, basketball, rugby, quidditch, and ultimate frisbee tournaments where teams self-referee, calling on ‘field managers’ if they can't resolve issues themselves. Teams will earn extra points for their diversity, even if they lose, actively rewarding diversity on the field. Teams may adjust players mid-game if a mismatch arises, prioritising participation and enjoyment over defeating the opposition.
The Bologna event will be followed by a second in Riace, Calabria, in July with a focus on refugees and asylum seekers. The events will strengthen local networks of associations, NGOs, social cooperatives, fan groups, and sports clubs who believe in a better world. It stands as a loud, joyful "No!" to business-as-usual competition and a resounding "Yes!" to human rights and solidarity, directly countering narratives of exclusion.
Programme
The three-day Bologna programme incudes:
- Sports Galore: Non-competitive tournaments run throughout (and into Friday/Saturday evenings) featuring football, volleyball, basketball, touch rugby, quidditch, ultimate frisbee, and even mini-rugby. Expect unique additions like "educational boxing" and "anti-racist wrestling" exhibitions.
- Cultural Beats: Immersive workshops invite participation in Samba and Pizzica dances. Evening stages come alive with diverse musical performances and spectacular dance shows like "Danza l'Africa" and "Allargare il Cerchio," providing a vibrant soundtrack without disturbing the neighborhood.
- Mind & Spirit: Traditional board games (checkers, chess, Mancala) offer quieter connection. Crucially, dedicated evening sessions (19:00-21:00) host discussions on the festival's central theme: "denied rights," providing space for political and cultural reflection that bridges the day's play and the night's festivities.
- Community Focus: The event culminates on Sunday with tournament finals, heartfelt award ceremonies (where the spirit of participation is likely prized above mere victory), and a final shared lunch – a moment of togetherness and farewells.
