Former Germany international Thomas Hitzlsperger will join grassroots groups, clubs and football governing bodies, including the Football Association of Belgium and UEFA, to address and make a public stand against homophobia in football at a Fare panel discussion on Friday 5 June in Berlin.

The „Taten statt Worte. Homophobie im Fußball nachhaltig bekämpfen aber wie?“ event (in English 'Actions Speak Louder than Words') seeks to highlight the problems faced by homosexual people in football and explore what clubs, governing bodies and supporters organisations can do to combat prejudice and promote an open approach to homosexuality.

The event will take place on the eve of the UEFA Champions League Final in Berlin and will look at the need to give drive to activities to pro-actively tackle discrimination against gays and lesbians on the pitch, in the stands and in administration.

Ahead of the event, Thomas Hitzlsperger welcomed the initiative and said: "I’m looking forward to the panel discussion and hope for practical approaches how clubs, players and administrators can recognise and confront homophobia. It must become even clearer that football is for everyone."

Claudia Krobitzsch, Programmes Coordinator of the Fare network explained: "Throughout Europe we can see that football clubs and associations often stand by helpless in the face of homophobic exclusion. They lack ideas to combat homophobia or are just indifferent. We look forward to an interesting evening; hope to drive the public debate and to encourage fans and institutions alike to take action."

Other event panellists include Patrick Gasser, Senior CSR Manager UEFA, Ann de Kock, project coordinator LGBT Action Plan Foundation of the Belgian FA, Anne-Kathrin Laufmann, Director CSR, Werder Bremen, Tanja Walther-Ahrens, ex Bundesliga player, Claudia Krobitzsch, Fare network programmes Co-ordinator, Discover Football delegate Pia man and Martin Endemann of Fußballfans gegen Homophobie. The session will be moderated by Nicole Selmer, of the football magazine "ballesterer".

The event is supported by the fan initiative Fußballfans gegen Homophobie, the Lesbian and Gay Association of Berlin-Brandenburg (LSVD), trade union Ver.di and Berliner Fenster. It takes place on the eve of both the UEFA Champions League final and the Berlin Respect Gaymes during the Berlin Sports Week (May 30 to June 6).

Am Vorabend des UEFA Champions League Finales in Berlin, 5. Juni 2015, lädt das Fare Netzwerk zur Podiumsdiskussion zum Thema Homophobie im Fußball in die Ver.di Zentrale, Paula-Thiede-Ufer 10, in Berlin ein.

Der ehemalige deutsche Nationalspieler Thomas Hitzlsperger wird mit VertreterInnen von Aktivistengruppen, UEFA, Werder Bremen und des belgischen Fußballverbands darüber debattieren, welche neuen Impulse gesetzt werden müssen, um Diskriminierung von Schwulen und Lesben auf dem Platz, den Rängen und auf Funktionärsebene aktiv entgegenzuwirken und wie eine Fußballkultur geschaffen werden kann, in der JedeR willkommen ist.

In einer offenen Debatte wird die Veranstaltung beleuchten, welchen Problemen sich homosexuelle Menschen im Fußball ausgesetzt sehen und was Vereine, Verbände und Fanorganisationen dagegen unternehmen können, um homophobe Vorurteile langfristig abzubauen und einen positiven und offenen Umgang mit Homosexualität voranzutreiben.

Thomas Hitzlsperger in Hinblick auf die Veranstaltung: "Ich freue mich auf die Podiumsdiskussion und erhoffe mir konkrete Ansätze, wie Vereine, Spieler und Funktionäre Homophobie erkennen und entgegentreten können. Es muss noch deutlicher werden, dass Fußball für alle da ist."

Claudia Krobitzsch, Programmkoordinatorin des Fare Netzwerks sagt: „Europaweit können wir feststellen, dass Fußballvereine und Verbände homophober Ausgrenzung oftmals hilflos gegenüberstehen. Es fehlt ihnen an Ideen zur Bekämpfung von Homophobie oder es herrscht Verunsicherung, wie mit dem Thema umgegangen werden soll. Darum ist es so wichtig, darüber zu sprechen und konkrete Handlungsansätze aufzuzeigen. Wir freuen uns auf einen interessanten Abend, hoffen die öffentliche Debatte voranzutreiben und sowohl Fans als auch Institutionen zu animieren, aktiv zu werden.“

Die Veranstaltung, wird unterstützt von der Faninitiative Fußballfans gegen Homophobie, LSVD Berlin Brandenburg, Ver.di und Berliner Fenster und findet am Vorabend des UEFA Champions League Finales und der Berliner Respect Gaymes während der Berlin Sports Week (30. Mai bis 6. Juni) statt.
