New handbook on volunteering for migrants launched
A new handbook has been launched to provide guidance on the inclusion of migrants as volunteers in sports clubs and organisations.
The handbook 'Volunteering of Migrants in Sport Clubs and Organisations' is the result of the work of the European Sport Inclusion Network (ESPIN) involving NGOs, migrant sport organisations, sport associations and clubs to increase participation and equal access to sport to disadvantaged and marginalised groups.
Being a volunteer is usually a rewarding experience that provides many benefits such as meeting new people, gaining skills and experience and making connections within the community.
Commenting on the handbook, Football Association of Ireland President Tony Fitzgerald said: "I gladly welcome the publication of the hand book and I am pleased that the Football Association of Ireland’s via our Intercultural Football Programme could be involved in this important project.
"I am assured that it will act as a useful guide for clubs seeking to recruit potential volunteers, whilst also providing a guide on volunteering for people from diverse backgrounds interested to volunteer their time in sports."
The guide is part of the “European Sport Inclusion Network – Promoting Equal Opportunities of Migrants and Minorities through Volunteering in Sport” project aimed at involving those who are at risk of social exclusion.
The ESPIN initiative is co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.
