Italian Lega B start crowdfunding campaign to build pitch for refugees in Lampedusa
Italy's second division of professional football Lega B and their charity B Solidly Onlus have started a crowdfunding campaign to part-fund a new football pitch in Lampedusa aimed at providing inclusion opportunities for refugees living on the island.
The campaign 'The Bridge - Un Ponte per Lampedusa' is looking to raise €100,000 to build the new pitch with a grandstand, changing rooms and floodlights for youth teams, students and refugees and also hopes to co-finance activities for youth teams on the island.
The project is meant to become a social hub for the community of Lampedusa and provide a range of opportunities varying from sport sessions, training courses, non-sporting events, furthering the inclusion and integration of refugees in the island.
Over the past 10 years, Lampedusa, Italy's southermost island, has become the point of entry into the EU for tens of thousands of migrants and asylum seekers.
In 2013, Lampedusa became a symbol of Europe's worsening migrant crisis after a boat carrying migrants sank off the Italian island killing 360 people.
Since its launch on 29 June the campaign has received over €50,000 in donations. The total budget for the project is of €2,000,000, financed by different partners including non-profit organisations, public and private institutions and the crowdfunding campaign.
In addition, the project will count on of professional clubs and major sports media outlets.
