FIFA sanction Argentina, Brazil and Mexico over fans’ homophobia

FIFA have announced a series of sanctions against countries including Argentina, Brazil and Mexico following incidents of homophobia at qualifying matches for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Argentina have been fined CHF 20,000, Brazil CHF 35,000 and Mexico CHF 10,000 for various incidents involving discriminatory and unsporting conduct by fans, including homophobic chants.

The latest sanctions include fines follow reports from the Fare observer scheme that is part of a global drive to tackle discrimination in FIFA regulated matches.

The three Football Federations had previously been sanctioned by the world football governing body over similar incidents.
