Tragedy for FURD and for the people of Mondiali14 July 2009

It is with great sadness that we report the news from FARE partner FURD. Yesterday, one of the team members from the Under 18 team died after the minibus crashed near Sheffield, coming back from Casalecchio.

The team, aged between 16 and 18 years old, along with youth workers from the project, were returning from the Mondiali to Sheffield via East Midlands Airport when the minibus crashed on the M1.

Two people were airlifted to hospital. Nine others suffered minor injuries.

FURD is a social inclusion project that uses football to work with young people from across the region. FURD have participated in the Mondiali every year since the festival began, with team of young people and always contributing to the atmosphere of the event.

During the prize giving ceremony, one individual said:
We are all united, we are like a village of people who participate at the happiness and sadness of everybody.

The organisers and everyone related to the Mondiali is unified in sorrow at this event and our thoughts are with boy's family and with everyone at FURD.
