Spain To Ban Racist Banners30 September 2002

The Spanish government is to outlaw banners that carry racist or fascist slogans. It is an attempt to stem the rise of violence in and around football stadiums.

Last season incidents broke out at several Spanish grounds, including one that resulted in Betis playing behind closed doors for two games. Alcohol will also be banned inside stadiums. Clubs whose fans breach the new laws will face sanctions immediately rather than after a lengthy appeals process.
