MTV kicks racism out of football03 July 2003

MTV Networks Europe has taken a look at a more sinister aspect of the world’s favourite sport football – with a thought provoking documentary ‘Free Your Mind: Kick Out Racism’ which will air across MTV Networks Europe to over 110 million homes from 26 June 2003.

Free Your Mind:Kick Out Racism, is a 30-minute documentary tackling the issue of racism in football, featuring footballers across Europe who’ve been subjected to racist taunts and abuse or have witnessed racial discrimination on and off the pitch. In keeping with MTV’s policy of specifically tailoring programming to fit in with the tastes and nuances of each market, MTV has produced an English and a German version of the documentary, the English version is presented by David James (Goalkeeper England/West Ham) England’s goalkeepers and the German account by the talented England International footballer Owen Hargreaves of Bayern Munich.

Twenty-five of Europe’s top footballers including, Ashley Cole (Arsenal & England), Marcel Desailly (Chelsea & France), Robert Pires (Arsenal & France), Gianfranco Zola (Chelsea and Italy), Damiano Tommasi (Roma & Italy) Cafu (Roma & Brazil), Matteo Ferrari (Parma & Italy), Umit Davala, (Galatasary & Turkey), Luis Figo (Real Madrid & Portugal) and Emanuel Olisadebe (Panathaniakos & Poland) discuss their experiences of racism and how it impacts their lives.

The hard-hitting documentary lifts the lid on different variations of racist discrimination in football – whether experienced in the stadium, on the pitch, in the changing room, by the fans, players, referees, managers/coaches and even at footballer’s homes – all areas are accounted for by footballers and highlighted further by footage depicting disturbing displays of racism and violence at football stadiums throughout Europe.

Last year MTV Europe’s Free Your Mind Award, which is presented each year at the MTV Europe Music Awards, was presented to FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe) a pan-European action group fighting all racial prejudice in football, at all levels of the sport. FARE’s aim is to see football played across the continent without racism and the documentary Free Your Mind: Kick Out Racism is a testimony to FARE’s work.
