Slovakia could face a ban after Emile Heskey and Andy Cole were subjected to a torrent of racial abuse throughout England’s Euro 2004 qualifier in Bratislava on Saturday. Whenever either Heskey or Cole received the ball, the crowd erupted into mass monkey chanting.
Heskey says it was the worst racist abuse he has experienced in his career.
“It just wasn’t in one section of the stadium, it was virtually the whole ground.”
“To hear it in this day and age is shocking and you would have thought that people might have moved on from that sort of thing by now.”
The Italian Referee referenced the incidents in his match report, which will lead to an UEFA investigation. The English FA is to launch a formal protest to UEFA.
Former England captain Terry Butcher, who attended the game, condemned the “morons”.
“It is a sign of ignorance. It is not nice – in fact it is disgusting.”
England captain David Beckham called on Uefa to tackle the problem.
“It’s up to the people in charge of the game to now do something about it.”
