Ecuadorian club invites Lilian Thuram to speak about racism in football

Deportivo Quito, an Ecuadorian Serie A football club, invited the former international French player Lilian Thuram to give a lecture to its players on racism in football.

The Guadalupe-born 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 champion used his book, “My Black Stars”, which tells the stories of black individuals who have fought against discrimination, to approach the topic of racism in the sport.

“What we are trying to do is to make people aware of prejudice. Many times people feel afraid to talk about racism and discrimination. I believe that by working together we are able to overcome these problems and live in an equal society.” said Thuram.

The French former player is in Ecuador to raise awareness of racism and discrimination and promote his foundation "Education Against Racism".

Thuram will also visit an Olympic High Performance Centre in the northern coastal province of Esmeraldas, in which he will share his experience and views on discrimination with athletes, and participate in a football match with former Ecuadorian national players.
