European Football’s governing body, UEFA, is to investigate claims that Christian Vieri racially abused Newcastle United’s Lomana Lua Lua. The alleged incident occurred during Newcastle’s UEFA Champions League 2 –2 draw against Iternazionale FC in Milan on Tuesday 11 March, 2003.
The two players clashed two minutes from time over a disputed fowl given in Inter’s favour. Lua Lua claimed that Vieri racially abused him, but Vieri has denied making any racist remarks. The Magpies made an official complaint after the match to UEFA who will investigate the matter further. Uefa have stated on their website that a “decision will most likely be taken on 21 March, with any appeal dealt with on 3 or 4 April.”
There are also reports that some sections of the Inter Milan crowd directed racist chanting towards Newcastle defender Titus Bramble.
