Romanian think-tank furthers social cohesion through football initiatives

In a move to foster social cohesion and create opportunities for community dialogue in Bucharest’s most economically and socially vulnerable areas, social inclusion and Roma think-tank Policy Center for Roma and Minorities Foundation organised two football gatherings for youngsters in March and April.

Over 50 children and young football fans from poor and marginalised communities of the Romanian capital celebrated the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (21 March) and the 'United through football' cup (26 April) in the company of a number of current and former footballers, showing their star quality, talent and commitment.

The programme for both events included talks on discrimination and the importance of acceptance, inclusion and understanding on the pitch, in the stands and across society as a whole, and small football tournaments. The gatherings also aimed to instil confidence and the football values of fair-play and team spirit in the children.

The initiatives were organised in collaboration with the Romanian Football Association (FRF) with whom the Romanian Fare member frequently organises anti-discrimination activities and works together in campaigns to raise awareness of this issue.

FRF president said: "I am glad that the Romanian Football Federation has the chance to support a project of Policy Center for Roma and Minorities, which aims to fight against discrimination.

"Through these Romanian football stresses its commitment to promote respect for each other, diversity and equal opportunities.

"The passion for football is born from the joy of every child involved in programs like this one, from which we hope to grow the champions of tomorrow".
