List of incidents reported to Fare during September 2018

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during September 2018. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently at place at UEFA club competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

01 September 2018 – Northern League First Division: North Shore United v Forrest Hill Milford

The father of a Forrest Hill player ran onto the pitch to shout racist abuse at a North Shore United player. 

01 September 2018 – English League Two: Grimsby Town v Yeovil Town

A Grimsby Town fan directed racist slurs towards Yeovil Town players during the match.

02 September 2018 Dutch Eredivisie – SBV Vitesse v Ajax

A group of Vitesse ultras sang anti-Semitic chants during the Eredivisie match against Ajax.

04 September 2018 – IF Brommapojkarna: Luis Pimenta

IF Brommapojkarna sacked manager Luis Pimenta after several players reported he used sexist and racist language after the match against BK Häcken.

06 September 2018 – UEFA Nations League: Czech Republic v Ukraine

A group of Ukraine fans displayed a far-right flag during the match.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

07 September 2018 – UEFA Nations League: Italy v Poland

A group of Poland fans sang xenophobic chants during the match.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

08 September 2018 – UEFA Nations League: England v Spain

LGBT Fan Group 3 Lions Pride reported a group of England fans to the Metropolitan Police for homophobic chanting during the match.

09 September – Belgian First Division B: Union SG v KV Mechelen

Assistant Coach of KV Mechelen Frederik Vanderbiest directed several racist slurs towards Union Assistant Coach Abder Ramdane.

10 September 2018 – Kreisliga A Ost Hochrhein: SC Lauchringen v FC Weizen

An FC Weizen fan racially abused SC Lauchringen player Keppa Mamadou in the final minutes of the ninth tier German league match. 

10 September 2018 – UEFA Nations League: Serbia v Romania

Several Serbia fans displayed far-right flags in support of the Chetnik movement and a group of both Serbia and Romania fans chanted, “Kill the Albanian” during the second half of the match.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

10 September 2018 – UEFA Nations League: Georgia v Latvia

Before the match began, members of the far-right group Georgia March staged an anti-LGBT protest outside the stadium in response to national team captain Guram Kashia receiving the UEFA Equal Game Award.

11 September 2018 – Colombian First Division: Rionegro Águilas v Once Caldas

Rionegro Águilas goalkeeper Lucero Álvarez racially abused Once Caldas player Johan Carbonero and coach Huberth Bodhert during the match.

11 September 2018 – International Friendly: Korea Republic v Chile

Chilean player Diego Valdes was pictured making racist gestures about Korean people ahead of his country’s match against South Korea in Suwon.

14 September 2018 – Scottish Premier League: St Mirren v Celtic

A St Mirren fan directed monkey chants towards Celtic players Odsonne Édouard and Olivier Ntcham during the match.

The incident was reported to police.

15 September 2018 – English League One: Burton Albion v Sunderland

Sunderland fan Anthony Sergeant made a racist comment during the League One match and was charged by Northumbria Police.

15 September 2018 - Serbian SuperLiga: FK Crvena Zvezda v Radnik Surdulica

A group of FK Crvena Zvezda fans sang homophobic chants about Serbia’s openly gay Prime Minister Ana Brnabić during the match.

16 September 2018 – Brazilian Serie A: Cruzeiro v Atlético Mineiro

A group of Atlético Mineiro directed homophobic chants towards the Cruzeiro fans during the match.

16 September 2018 - Austrian Bundesliga: Rapid Wien v Austria Wien

Groups of fans from both Rapid Wien and Austria Wien directed homophobic chants towards each other during the match.

17 September 2018 – English Premier League: Southampton v Brighton and Hove Albion

A Southampton fan was arrested after he made homophobic gestures towards Brighton fans during the match.

19 September 2018 – UEFA Champions League: Valencia C.F. v Juventus FC

Juventus player Emre Can made a sexist comment in response to the sending off of Cristiano Ronaldo during the match.

19 September 2018 – UEFA Champions League: Manchester City v Olympique Lyon

A Lyon fan performed a Nazi salute during the Champions League match at the Etihad Stadium.

19 September 2018 – UEFA Champions League: Ajax v AEK Athens

A group of Ajax fans sang homophobic chants about league rivals PSV Eindhoven during the match.

20 September 2018 – UEFA Europa League: Spartak Trnava v Anderlecht

A group of Spartak Trnava fans sang anti-semitic chants about local rivals Slovan Bratislava.

A report was submitted to UEFA for action.

20 September 2018 – UEFA Europa League: Spartak Trnava v Anderlecht

A large group of Spartak Trnava fans sang an anti-Semitic chant after the match.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

22 September 2018 – Belgian Amateur Division B: Sporting Hasselt v FC Turnhout

A group of Sporting Hasselt fans directed monkey chants towards FC Turnhout player Djeson Olongo

29 September 2018 – Italian Serie A: Juventus FC v SSC Napoli

A large group of Juventus fans displayed banners and sang racist chants about people from Naples during the match 

Sanctions 

Belgian First Division B Disciplinary Committee: Frederik Vanderbiest and Abder Ramdane

KV Mechelen Assistant Coach Frederik Vanderbiest has been handed a three-match ban and fined 1500 EUR for racially abusing Union Assistant Coach Abder Ramdane during the Belgian First Division B match played on the 9thSeptember 2018.

In response to the racist abuse, Abder Ramdane physically assaulted Vanderbiest. Ramdane received a ten match ban and was fined 4250 EUR.

Colombian Football Federation – Lucero Álvarez

Rionegro Águilas goalkeeper Lucero Álvarez has been banned for eight matches and fined USD 10,250 after he racially abused Once Caldas player Johan Carbonero and coach Huberth Bodhert during the match played on the 11 September 2018.

FC Midtjylland: Two Supporters Banned

FC Midtjylland have banned two fans from their stadium, the MCH Arena for one year after they unveiled a banner insighting racial hatred during the UEFA Europa League match against Malmö F.F. played on the 30 August 2018.

Flanders Football Sports Committee: Sporting Hasselt

Sporting Hasselt will play one match behind closed doors and were fined 5000 EUR after fans racially abused FC Turnhout players during the Amateur Second Division B match played on the 22ndSeptember 2018.

Football Association of Finland: Jonathan Jänitti

Ekenäs IF player Jonathan Jänitti received a warning from the Finnish FA after he directed racist slurs towards Kotkan Työväen Palloilijat player Jean da Silva during a Finnish Second Division match played on the 27 August 2018.

Highbury Corner Magistrates Court: Southampton fan Adam Gough

Adam Gough was convicting of causing racially aggravated distress and handed a three-match ban after he racially abused Southampton player Ryan Bertrand after the match against Arsenal played on the 8thApril 2018.

Northumbria Police: Sunderland fan Anthony Sergeant

Sunderland fan Anthony Sergeant was given a public banning order after he made a racist comment during Sunderland’s League One match against Burton Albion played on the 15 September 2018.

UEFA: FK Crvena Zvezda

FK Crvena zvezda supporters have been banned from attending the club’s next two away fixtures in UEFA competition after fans displayed a far-right banner during the match against RB Salzburg played on the 29 August 2018 in Vienna.

UEFA: Polish Football Association

The Polish FA have been sanctioned by UEFA with a partial stadium closure at the country’s next home match in UEFA competition and must display a #EqualGame banner. The sanction comes after a group of Poland fans sang xenophobic chants during a Nations League match against Italy, played on the 7 September 2018.
