List of incidents reported to Fare during April 2018

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during April 2018. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently at place at UEFA club competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

01 April 2018 – Brazilian Paranaense Second Division: Iraty Sport Club v Operário Ferroviário Esporte Clube

After the match between Iraty Sport Club and Operário Ferroviário Esporte Clube, Operário’s Press Officer Bianca Machado was subjected to misogynist comments from approximately 20 Iraty fans.

05 April 2018 – UEFA Europa League: SS Lazio v RB Salzburg

A group of SS Lazio fans unveiled a far-right banner during the first half of the match.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

07 April 2018 – Spanish La Liga: Real Betis v SD Eibar

SD Eibar player Iván Alejo made a racist comment towards Real Betis player Andrés Guardado during the match.

07 April 2018 – U.C Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero

U.C. Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero made a misogynistic comment during a post-match interview.

07 April 2018 – German Bundesliga: Borussia Mönchengladbach v Hertha Berlin

A group of Borussia Mönchengladbach fans directed misogynistic chants towards the match official Bibiana Steinhaus.

08 April – Indian Super Cup: Aizawl FC v Kingfisher East Bengal

Kingfisher East Bengal player Dudu Omagbemi was racially abused by a group of East Bengal’s own fans during the match.

08 April 2018 – English Premier League: Arsenal v Southampton

Southampton fan Adam Gough racially abused Southampton player Ryan Bertrand at the end of the Premier League match.

09 April 2018 – Russian Premjer League: CSKA Moscow v Dinamo Moscow

A group of CSKA Moscow fans directed monkey chants towards Dinamo Moscow player Samba Sow during the match.

12 April 2018 – Copa Sudamericana: Rosario Central v São Paulo

A group of Rosario Central fans directed racist chants towards São Paulo fans during the match.

12 April 2018 – UEFA Europa League: CSKA Moscow v Arsenal

A group of CSKA Moscow fans made monkey chants towards Arsenal players Danny Welbeck and Alex Iwobi during the match.

15 April 2018 – Russian Second Division: FC Fakel Voronezh v FC Luch-Energiya Vladivostok

A FC Luch Energiya fan threw a rooster at manager Aleksandr Grigoryan. In Russia, this is a homophobic gesture.

15 April 2018 – Romanian Second Division: CS Baloteşti v Foresta Suceava

Foresta Suceava player Moussa Konate walked off the pitch in the 27th minute of the match after a large group of C.S. Balotesti fans directed racist chants towards the player.

15 April 2018 – Chilean First Division: Universidad de Chile v Colo Colo

Universidad de Chile player Jean Beausejour was racially abused by Colo Colo goalkeeper Augustín Orión during the second half of the match.

17 April 2018: Spanish La Liga – Celta Vigo v FC Barcelona

Celta Vigo player Iago Aspas made a racist comment towards FC Barcelona player Yerry Mina during the match.

18 April 2018 – Russian Cup: Spartak Moscow v FC Tosno

A group of Spartak Moscow fans directed monkey chants towards FC Tosno player Nuno Rocha during the match.

19 April 2018 - Copa Libertadores: Racing Club v Vasco da Gama

A group of Racing Club fans made monkey gestures towards Vasco da Gama fans.

19 April 2018 – Copa Libertadores: Independiente v Corinthians

An Independiente fan made monkey gestures towards Corinthians fans.

21 April 2018 – Copa del Rey: Sevilla FC v FC Barcelona

An FC Barcelona fan sexually harassed Canal + reporter Marina Lorenzo before the 2018 Copa del Rey final between Sevilla FC and FC Barcelona.

22 April 2018 – OFC Champions League: Lautoka FC v Marist FC

Lautoka FC player Samuela Drudru made a racist comment towards the match official during the match.

22 April 2018 - Spanish La Liga: Atlético Madrid v Real Betis

An Atlético Madrid fan displayed a Swastika balloon during the match against Real Betis.

24 April 2018 – Referee Adalid Maganda

Referee Adalid Maganda reported that his dismissal by heads of the Mexican Referee Commission, Arturo Brizio Carter and Jorge Gasso was racially motivated.

26 April 2018 - A.C.D. Guadalajara fan

A.C.D. Guadalajara fan sexually harassed Fox Sports News Reporter María Fernanda Mora as she was on air.

27 April 2018 – Copa Libertadores: Vasco da Gama v Racing Club

Racing Club fans threw banana peels at the Vasco da Gama fans during the match in a racially motivated attack.

28 April 2018 - Journalist Eduardo Bueno

During an appearance on Radio Gaucha’s ‘The Room’ broadcast, journalist Eduardo Bueno made a misogynistic comment towards Eduarda Streb who was also a guest on the show.

28 April 2018 – Fluminense fans

A group of Fluminense fans directed misogynistic chants towards Vasco da Gama Press Officer Sarah Borborema before the Campeonato Carioca U-20 semi final match.

28 April 2018 – Italian Serie A: Inter Milan v Juventus

A large group of Inter Milan fans directed racist chants towards Juventus player Blaise Matuidi.

29 April 2018 – US Major League Soccer: Los Angeles FC v Seattle Sounders

Members of the Los Angeles FC fan group 3252 Independent Supporters directed homophobic chants towards Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei when he took a goal kick.

29 April 2018 – Ceará Sporting Club

A group of Ceará Sporting Club fans physically attacked and directed misogynist comments towards Vozão TV journalist Mari Rios after the Brazilian Serie A match between Ceará and Flamengo.

Several individuals racially abused Fulham player Cyrus Christie on Twitter.

Twitter: Márcio Chagas

Former referee and commentator for RBS TV Márcio Chagas was subjected to racist abuse on Twitter by a Grêmio fan.

Twitter: Paulo Marcos de Jesus Ribeiro

Vasco da Gama player Paulo Marcos de Jesus Ribeiro, known as Paulão, received racist tweets from several Vasco da Gama fans for missing a goal during the Campeonato Carioca final against Botafogo.

Sanctions

Metropolitan Police: Chelsea fan Lee Munns

Chelsea fan Lee Munns was fined £85 and ordered to serve 70 hours community service after the Metropolitan Police found him guilty of committing a Public Order Offence after he published an anti-Semitic about Tottenham Hotspur.

Russian Football Union Disciplinary Committee: FC Zenit

Russian Football Union fined FC Zenit 100,000 RUB after their fans sang far-right chants during a Russian First Division match.

Russian Football Union Disciplinary Committee: Spartak Moscow

Russian Football Union fined Spartak Moscow 100,000 RUB and received a partial stadium closure after a group of Spartak fans directed monkey chants towards FC Tosno’s Nuno Rocha during the Russian Cup match played on the 18th April 2018.
