Incidents list reported to Fare during November 2017

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during November 2017. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts. A Fare observer scheme is also currently at place at UEFA club competitions to monitor discriminatory behaviour.

Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

02 November 2017 – UEFA Europa League: BSC Young Boys v Dinamo Kiev

Dinamo Kiev fans displayed several neo-Nazi and far-right banners throughout the match.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

02 November 2017 - UEFA Europa League: Vitesse v Zulte Waregem

A ball boy within the stadium directed a racist comment towards Zulte Waregem striker Peter Olayinka.

09 November 2017 – FIFA World Cup Qualifier: Croatia v Greece

Croatian fans sang discriminatory chants relating to religion during the match.

A report was sent to FIFA for action.

10 November 2017 – International Friendly: Republic of Korea v Colombia

Colombia player Edwin Cardona made a racist gesture towards a group of Korean players during the match.

18 November 2017 – English Premier League: Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur

An Arsenal fan made monkey noises after Dele Alli was substituted during the North London derby.

19 November 2017 – Football Association of Singapore

Singapore's FA has been accused of age discrimination after it passed new legislation to cap the number of older players.

23 November 2017 – UEFA Europa League: FK Partizan vs BSC Young Boys

A group of Partizan fans displayed a banner supporting war criminal Rakto Mladic.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

23 November 2017 – UEFA Europa League: BATE Borisov vs FK Crvena Zvezda

FK Crvena Zvezda fans sang chants praising Rakto Mladic who was responsible for ethnic cleansing of Bosnian Muslims in the early 1990s'.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

24 November 2017 - UEFA Europa League: FC Zenit vs. FK Vardar

A group of Zenit fans displayed a banner in honour of war criminal Rakto Mladic.

A report was sent to UEFA for action.

29 November 2017 – CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores: Torcida Lanús v Grêmio

A Torcida Lanús fan made monkey gestures towards Grêmio fans during the match.

30 November 2017 – Former player Ruben Schaken

Former player Ruben Schaken was criticised after publishing homophobic comments in his autobiography.

Twitter: Cyrus Christie

Irish defender Cyrus Christie was subjected to racist abuse from Irish fans on Twitter following the Republic of Ireland’s loss to Denmark.

Twitter: Julien Sanchez

Front National spokesperson Julien Sanchez made racist and xenophobic comments about the Moroccan football fans celebrating their country's 2018 World Cup qualification in Paris.

Sanctions

Brighton Magistrates Court: Jonathan Coombs

Southampton fan Jonathan Coombs has been banned from attending football matches for three years after he directed homophobic abuse towards Brighton fans during the match played on the 29th October.

Liga Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala: Deportivo Suchitepequez

Deportivo Suchitepequez must play their next home match behind closed doors and received a fine of 30,000 Quetzales (GTQ) for discriminatory chants by a group of fans directed at the Honduran player Darwin Oliva from Sport Petapa.

Portuguese Football Federation (FPF): Sporting Braga

Sporting Braga must play their next match against Paços de Ferreira behind closed doors and pay a fine of €22,950 due to the discriminatory behaviour of their fans during the match against Desportivo das Aves played on the 20th August.

FIFA: Poland, Serbia, Ukraine, Mexico, Costa Rica, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru

FIFA sanctioned several national football associations for discriminatory incidents that have taken place by spectators during the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Argentina (CHF 40,000), Brazil (CHF 10,000), Chile (CHF 20,000), Mexico (CHF 10,000) and Peru (CHF 25,000) were sanctioned for homophobic chants by a group of their supporters. Costa Rica (CHF 10,000) was sanctioned for sexist/ misogynist chants.

Poland (CHF 20,000), Ukraine (CHF 35,000) and Serbia (CHF 90,000 and CHF 70,000) were sanctioned for several far right and nationalistic banners
