Croatian executive claims “Gay people are for ballet, not for football”17 November 2010

Another homophobic quote has appeared in Croatian football.

The executive vice president of top Croatian team Dinamo Zagreb, Zdravko Mamic has commented on recent words of Vlatko Markovic, the president of Croatian Football Federation who has said gay people should not play in the national team.

“I would not have Gay people playing in my national team either”, Zdravko Mamic of Dinamo Zagreb was quoted as saying to tabloid 24 Sata.

“Gay people are for ballet. They can be journalists or writers. They would never put their head in front of a football boot” he said.

Croatian Football Federation president Vlatko Markovic made headlines all over the world recently after being quoted in the daily Vecernji List as saying: “While I'm a president of the Croatian Football Federation, there will be no homosexuals playing in the national team”.

Gay and lesbian associations have announced their intention to sue him. Mr. Markovic later tried to explain he was wrongly quoted.
