Council of Europe considers banning anti-gay chanting23 October 2003

Interesting news from the Hague in the Netherlands on the 17th October, 2003. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe is debating the possibility of criminalizing anti-gay chanting at sports events. According to a draft recommendation adopted by the Assembly’s Culture Committee, Homophobic chanting at sports events should be made a criminal offence.

Approving a report on gays and lesbians in sport by former British sports minister Tony Banks, the committee said homophobia in sport should be combated on the same grounds as racism. The report is likely to be debated by the Assembly next year.
