Top players dispel asylum myths in video26 April 2004

FARE partner, Show Racism the Red Card has gathered together some of the UK’s top footballing personalities in an educational video that aims to dispel some of the myths around asylum seekers. Supported by Amnesty International and the Refugees Council, the video features Gary Lineker, Thierry Henry, Shaka Hislop, Lomana Lua Lua, David James, Shola Ameobi, Sven Goran Eriksson and Ashley Cole.

Ged Grebby of Show Racism the Red Card said:
“This is the first time Show Racism the Red Card has done a video to combat racism against asylum seekers and we were delighted with the response we got from professional footballers. The video is a strong educational tool and will hopefully reach an audience of millions of people.”

The video is aimed squarely at schools and educators working with young people. It includes asylum seekers talking about their experiences of seeking asylum in the UK. It also features a quiz on asylum that counters some of the racist myths that hamper this vulnerable group. The video together with an education pack are available for £10 from Show Racism the Red Card.
