Incidents reported to FARE during May 2013

The following list of incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to FARE during May 2013. This is not a comprehensive list and is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to our attention through eye- witness or media accounts. FARE has third party reporting status with UEFA and FIFA on international matches, at a national level we can support incident reports made by members or national partners.

01 May 2013 – UEFA Champions League - Barcelona v Bayern Munich
In the Camp Nou a supporter of the German side was seen wearing a t-shirt with a Celtic cross on the back and another one with a Walhalla patch on his backpack. Walhall is a myth of a pagan Viking religion in which God Odin kills Nordic/German warriors, the symbol is often used by racists and neo-Nazis.

03 May 2013 – Croatia: NK Lokomotiva v NK Osijek
Members of the NK Osijek fan group Cohort racially abused the NK Lokomotiva Cameroonian footballer and Croatian citizen Mathias Chago and chanted several nationalist slogans throughout the match targeting the Serbs. ”Grass we smoke, Serbs we beat! Grass we smoke, Serbs we torture!”, “Kill, kill the Serbs”, “Mamić, Mamić, you Gypsy!”.

05 May 2013 – Croatia: HNK Rijeka v GNK Dinamo
In the third minute of the match Bad Blue Boys, a fan group of GNK Dinamo, chanted “Mamić, you Gypsy, leave the holy shrine!” and later on "Mangy Rijeka, you are full of Serbs, but don't worry, there are still some trees.", a reference to a saying which dates from the time of the independent state of Croatia.

05 May 2013 – Iran: Paykan v Sepasi
The Iranian Football Federation banned the Paykan FC manager Firouz Karimi for eight games and fined him €2,315 for calling the Sepasi Curaçaoan footballer Sendley Sidney Bito a “cannibal” and a “negro” and refusing to shake his hand.

09 May 2013 – Germany: Sachsenhausen v SV Babelsberg 03
During the match, a group of neo-Nazi fans from Sachsenhausen displayed a banner which read “Sachsenhausen gib Gas!” ("Sachsenhausen step on the gas!"). The expression referred to the fact that one of Germany’s concentration camps during the Third Reich was based in Sachsenhausen where thousands of victims were gassed.

12 May 2013 – Italy: AC Milan v AS Roma
The AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli was the target of racist insults from visiting AS Roma fans. The referee Gianluca Rocchi called the game to a halt in the second half to warn the crowd via the tannoy system.

AS Roma were fined €50,000 by the Italian league for racially abusing three Milan players, none of them were named in the Lega Calcio's notification of the punishment.

The club was also given a partial stadium closure, specifically the Curva Sud section, for one game at the start of next season.

12 May 2013 – Turkey: Fenerbahce v Galatasaray
The former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba and his fellow Ivorian Emmanuel Eboué were subjected to monkey chants and the display of bananas from a group of fans of Fenerbahce during the Istanbul derby.

23 May 2013 – Macedonia: Teteks v Shkendija
The final of the Macedonian Cup played between Teteks and Shkendija was abandoned to stem rising tensions after rival Macedonian and ethnic Albanian fans began exchanging nationalist chants.

The match was abandoned after 20 minutes for fear that the chants would ignite violence.
The FA rescheduled the match and ordered it to be played behind closed doors.

26 May 2013 – Russia: FC Alania Vladikavkaz v Spartak Moscow
FC Alania Vladikavkaz’s Ivorian defender Akès da Costa Goore was shown a red card after making a gesture at some fans of the visiting team who targeted him with monkey noises and Nazi salutes.

29 May 2013 – England: Lee Ashcroft
The Northwich Victoria manager and former England Under-21 international Lee Ashcroft has been banned for 10 matches for abusing the female coach of Gresley FC Hannah Dingley in a match in January 2013.

The English FA found Ashcroft guilty of using abusive and/or insulting words.
