Incidents reported to Fare during May 201413 June 2014

The following incidents of racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia have been reported to Fare during May 2014. This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred.

All reports have been brought to Fare’s attention through eyewitness or media accounts. Fare has third party reporting status with UEFA, and FIFA on international matches, and at a national level we can support incident reports made by our members.

01 May 2014 – UK Championship: Middlesbrough fans

Two Middlesbrough fans, who ripped up a copy of the Koran at an away match between Birmingham City v Middlesbrough, on 7 December 2013, have been found guilty of a religiously-aggravated public order offence.

The two fans have been fined €860 and €740, respectively, for their improper behaviour and trial costs.

03 May 2014 – Polish Ekstraklasa: Piast Gliwice v Slask Wroclaw

A group of Slask Wroclaw fans racially abused Piast Gliwice Burkina Faso player Victor Nikiema every time he touched the ball.

Details of the incident were passed to the Polish FA for action.

04 May 2014 – Spanish La Liga: Levante v Atlético Madrid

A group of Atlético Madrid fans racially abused Levante’s Senegalese midfielder Papakouli Diop by making monkey noises and gestures.

08 May 2014 – English Calor League Division One South and West FA: Taunton Town v Mangotsfield

The English Football Association have launched an investigation after a Mangotsfield complaint claimed alleged racist comments directed at its players made on the field and by people attending the match on 12 April 2014.

The exact details of the alleged incident are subject to the Football Association investigation.

10 May 2014 – German Bundesliga: Bayer Leverkusen v Werder Bremen

A group of Bayer Leverkusen fans displayed a homophobic banner.

11 May 2014 – Brazilian Brasileirão Série A: Atlético-MG v Cruzeiro

Cruzeiro director of football Alexandre Mattos made sexist comments towards the female assistant referee Fernanda Colombo Uliana.

11 May 2014 – Bulgarian A PFG: Botev Plovdiv v CSKA Sofia 

CSKA Sofia Portuguese winger Toni Silva was racially abused by Botev Plovdiv defender Veselin Minev.

11 May 2014 – Italian Serie A: Atalanta v Milan

A group of Atalanta fans racially abused AC Milan Guinean and Dutch midfielders Kevin Constant and Nigel de Jong.

Atalanta were fined €40,000 and ordered a partial stadium closure for one game. The Italian league’s disciplinary tribunal suspended the sanction for one year.

11 May 2014 – Ukrainian Tysmenitsky regional championship: Zagvizdia v Chukalivka

The owner of Chukalivka racially abused one of his team’s black players by throwing a banana in his direction after the player was sent off.

17 May 2014 – Polish Ekstraklasa: Korona Kielce v Piast Gliwice

A group of Korona Kielce fans displayed a nationalist white pride flag.

Details of the incident were passed to the Polish FA for action.

18 May 2014 – Spanish Segunda B: Llagostera v Racing Santander

A supporter of Llagostera racially abused Racing de Santander’s Ivorian player Mamadou Koné.

The supporter, who has been identified as an employee of FC Barcelona’s museum, has been removed from her job and has been issued a life-time ban from Camp Nou.

Llagostera reported the fan to the police and have also banned her from their games.

19 May 2014 – Polish Ekstraklasa: Ruch Chorzow v Wisla Krakow

A group of Ruch Chorzow fans racially abused Wisla Krakow Haitian midfielder Wilde-Donald Guerrier every time he touched the ball.

Details of the incident were passed to the Polish FA for action.

21 May 2014 – UEFA proceedings opened: Paris Saint-Germain F.C.

UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against Paris Saint-Germain for alleged offences concerning “racism, other discriminatory conduct and propaganda” during the club’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg against Chelsea FC played on 2 April in Paris.

The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body on 17 July 2014.

Details of the incidents were passed to UEFA for action and followed up by CAFE.

21 May 2014 – Italian National Team Training base: Mario Balotelli

The Italian international Mario Balotelli was subjected to racist chants outside Italy’s training base in Coverciano.

21 May 2014 – Beach Football South American games: Brazil v Uruguay

Uruguay’s Gabriel López, allegedly racially abused the Brazilian national team goalkeeper Jenilson Brito Rodrigues, also known as Mão.

24 May 2014 – Argentinian Torneo B: San Lorenzo de Alem v Puerto Madryn

Photojournalist of the Argentinian website Solo Futbol en Imágenes Evelin Rivero was subjected to racist and xenophobic abuse made by Deportivo Madryn’s Uruguayan player Sebastián Pereyra.

30 May 2014 – Twitter: Celtic Glasgow fan

A Celtic Glasgow fan has been jailed for racist and threatening tweets directed at former Rangers FC players El-Hadji Diouf and Sone Aluko

The fan pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court.
