Biggest-ever European Action Week against Racism in Football kicks off!
Europe’s largest anti-racism campaign in sport kicks off on Thursday, 16th October.
For the 9th successive season the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network is calling on all stakeholders across European football to make a joint stand for equality and against racism and discrimination.
This year the FARE Action Week will see an unprecedented 40 European countries getting involved in a united effort to rid the game of racism and prevent exclusion. From the 16 - 28 October the FARE Action Week will feature a wide range of activities in and outside stadiums by supporters, players, football clubs, associations, ethnic minority organisations and youth groups.
As has become customary in October European top leagues - including the UEFA Champions League - will be joined by hundreds of grassroots initiatives from all corners of the continent to take a symbolic stand against racism and discrimination through activities designed to raise awareness of the issue, and underline football's determination to stamp it out.
Broad involvement of the grassroots
Following a call for action in September, 200 groups have developed creative ideas and submitted proposals for action. With the financial backing of UEFA, FARE is able to provide small scale grants to nearly 120 groups, worth 50.000 € in total.
FARE has also produced a host of campaign materials to be distributed across Europe including a new Action Week poster. The poster has been designed by the Italian FARE group Progetto Ultrà and carries the slogan “Different Colours, One Game”. In addition, the FARE commissioned anti-racism spot produced for the UEFA EURO 2008 has been distributed widely.
The European wide Action Week is coordinated by a group of seven experienced FARE organisations based in Austria, England, Itlay, France, Germany, Spain and Poland. Piara Powar, Director of FARE UK member Kick It Out, said:
“The FARE Action Week provides a focal point for everyone connected to football, from supporters to players, to stand up against discrimination in all its forms.
“The game flourishes when people from all communities, and from all walks of life, are able to participate in it. Activity like this reinforces the FARE ethos and is a vital part of the drive for equality at all levels of the game.”
