Education pack

Racism

A multimedia training programme which can be used in the training and education of trainers/coaches and sports instructors, to help them to avoid and challenge discrimination in their work in youth sports.

It consists of 10 video clips showing different scenarios and an accompanying handbook with advice for coaches on the issues raised in the films.

It was compiled with European funding and the handbook is available online in English, French, German and Serbian. The films contain no dialogue so no language knowledge is necessary.

This page on the FURD website is a gateway to information about Arthur Wharton, the world's first black professional footballer. It links to further information, poetry, an extract from the BBC documentary 'Black Flash' and this workbook full of educational activities based on the lives of Wharton and Walter Tull, the second black footballer.

Vasili, Phil

An 134-page advisory document for schools by the British government, published in 2006. It includes ideas for discussion topics and activities to use in tackling racism and religious intolerance with schoolchildren. Some of the topics have a football theme. Some of the links are out of date.

Department for Education and Skills (DfES)

Educational activities based on the life of Walter Tull, one of the first black footballers, who was also a British army officer in the first world war. The site includes a downloadable activity pack, ideas for drama workshops and an animated film made by children.

KickIt Out

This learning pack is designed for teachers to use children’s interest in the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa to explore South Africa’s history, culture and context.

It is packed with activities aimed at 9-14 year olds which address many elements of the National Curriculum.

Football fan culture, carbon footprints and issues of equal opportunity, discrimination and human rights are covered. Football and Freedom also encourages schools to develop a longer term interest in South Africa through twinning.

 

National Union of Teachers (NUT), Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA) and others

A series of activities for primary and secondary pupils involving written and oral expression to promote positive sporting values like tolerance, equality and cooperation. Most of the activities use examples from the Olympic Games. Race and gender equality are featured in the ‘Humanity’ section. The site stresses the importance of input from teachers. It includes video clips, online games and group exercises. Available in Catalan, Spanish, English, French and Portugese.

Fundació FC Barcelona

An education pack that accompanies the 'Pioneers, Past Masters & Future Challenges' exhibition about diversity in football. The exhibition can be bought from Kick It Out for £50 or borrowed from Football Unites, Racism Divides.

Kick It Out

A webpage linking to PDFs of various educational publications produced by the campaign. 'Show Racism the Red Card', 'Islamophobia', 'A Safe Place' and 'Out of Site' are to be used alongside their DVDs of the same names. They are available in English and Welsh languages. The page also links to 'Guidance for Initial Teacher Trainers', 'Get Involved: Guidance for Clubs' and 'Guidance for Councils', amongst others.

Show Racism the Red Card

This education pack is designed to be used with the Show Racism the Red Card Ireland DVD. It is aimed maily at senior primary and secondary schools but can also be used in other anti-racism and anti-bullying training.
